An estimated 3000 people attended the recent St Albans City
Youth FC Annual 2002 6 A Side Tournament, held at Sandringham School.
With 96 teams taking part from five counties, this event has now become firmly
established in the Hertfordshire youth football calendar. The event, for teams
from Under 9's to Under 12's was sponsored by a number of local companies and
is now one of City Youth's main fund-raising events of the year.

The Tournament
Under 9's
Richard Thomas Trophy
The Under 9's A team were playing in group D, although they
did not lose a match they had to contend with third place in the table.
The Young Saints started with a 0-0 draw against Harvesters B, this was
followed up with a 1-1 draw against Welwyn Pegasus with Harry Gray
scoring the equalising goal direct from a corner kick. In their
next game two excellent goals from Max O?Shea saw them beat
Oxhey Utd 2-0 whilst in their last match they drew 0-0 against Wheathamstead.
The Under 9's B team did not have
a good day, losing all their five games , finishing bottom of group C.
In the Semi Finals Bury Rangers defeated Welwyn Pegasus 1-0 with a goal
from Eddie Barton in extra time. In the other Semi Final Ryefield
Rangers defeated Birchwood 4-2 on penalties after the match ended goalless
after extra time.
The Final also ended goalless after extra time and once again Ryefield
won on spot kicks 4-3. The scorers for Ryefield were Callum Marriott,
Harry Green, Rik Ruddick and Nicholas Prior, the Goalkeeper
netting the winner. The Bury Rangers scorers were Eddie Barton, Thomas
Welsh and Joshua Palmer. The Bury keeper Joe Pearce had a fine game in the
final.

Under 10's
Gavin Pendred Trophy
The Young Saints entered three teams in the Under 10's Tournament, with
the A Team finishing runners up in group B with seven points. In their
first game they drew 1-1 with Flitwick Town with Toby Irish scoring the
goal from close range after Luke Campion's
shot was blocked. They then beat Berkhamsted Raiders 2-0
with Luke Thatcher striking the second goal after an own goal had
put the Saints into the lead. A superb long range shot by Luke Thatcher
in the second half saw them beat Minchenden B
1-0. In their final group match against Hertsmere the
young saints only needed a draw to go through to the Semi Finals but
finally lost 1-0 to a late goal.
The B team were in group D, they
started off with two 2-0 defeats against Minchenden Youth and
Echoes Youth respectively. They then lost 2-1 in their third game
against London Colney with Gareth Smith scoring. Two fine strikes from
James Laws plus another goal from Gareth Smith
saw them defeat Garston Boys 3-1. In their final match they lost 1-0 to
Palace Youth. The C Team got off to a good
start with a 1-0 victory over Wheathamstead with Elliott Goward
scoring the goal after being set-up with a fine pass from Andrew
Jarvis. In their next game in group A they lost 1-0 to Oxhey
Utd. In their third match they went down 3-2 to a last minute goal after coming
back from 2-0 down. The goals for the Saints were
scored by Matthew Pearce and Adam Belaroussi. Their final two
games were both draws, 0-0 against
Harpenden Colts and 1-1 with Harvesters.
The four Semi Finalists for the Gavin Pendred Trophy were Harvesters, who won
Group A unbeaten with eleven points, Hertsmere who also
went unbeaten to win Group B, Boreham Wood 2000 and London Colney.
In the first Semi Hertsmere beat Harvesters 1-0 after extra
time with Jack Baker scoring the only goal. The other Semi was also
1-0 with London Colney winning 1-0 against Boreham Wood 2000, Ross Wilshire
scoring the winning goal.
The Final was also settled by one goal with Shane McDonald scoring
to give London Colney a 1-0 victory over Hertsmere.

Under 11's
Ben Lacey Trophy
In the Under 11's Tournament the Young Saints had four teams. The C
team in Group A finished in mid table with two wins, two draws and one defeat.
The two victories were against Elstree Vale 3-0
with goals from James Ward, Chris Barry and Tom Clark. Chris
Barry scored the only goal in their other win, a 1-0 victory other
Berkhamsted. The two draws were 0-0 against Leighton and a 2-2 draw
against Chase Side, with Tom Clark scoring both
goals. Their only defeat was against Bury Rangers.
The team in Group B lost their first game 2-1
against Minchenden with Tristian Augier scoring for the
Saints. In their other three games they lost 5-0
to Stevenage, 1-0 against St Albans Rangers and 5-0 to Bury
Rangers. Also losing to Minchenden in their first game
were St Albans City B in Group C, going down 2-1 with Matthew
Mawhood scoring in the second half. They then lost 1-0 to Harlow and drew
0-0 with Harvesters before beating Hertford Town 1-0 with a
fine goal from Nick Glasgow. In their final game
they went down by a single goal to Harpenden Colts.
In the final Group St Albans City D got off to a good start when
they beat Echoes Gold 2-0 with two great strikes from Michael McDonough.
In their second game they were losing 1-0 to Aldenham
but then the Young Saints turned it on with some delightful
football and ran out 3-1 winners with goals from Alex
Twyman, James Smith and Michael McDonough. Their last
two matches both ended goalless against Chase Side and London
Colney. St Albans and Chase Side both finished the group with
identical records, so to decide who progressed through
to the Semi Finals
there was a penalty shoot out between the two
teams. The Young Saints won the shoot out 2-1.
In the Semi Final the Saints met Harpenden (The Winners of Group C)
and they went through to the final with a 1-0 victory, with Michael McDonough
scoring the winning goal after being set up by James Smith.
The other Semi Final was between Chase Side A and
Stevenage Borough, with Chase Side winning 5-4 on spot kicks after the match
had ended goal less.
Although McDonough and Smith went close early on in the Final for the Saints it
was Chase Side A who won the match 4-0 with two fine goals
from Matt Line, the first was a scorcher, the other goals came from Ricky
Harvey and Joe Vial.

Under 12's
Joe Horgan Trophy
In the Under 12's Tournament the winners of
Group A were Echoes Youth with an unbeaten record, thirteen points from their
five matches, plus ten goals scored and none against.
Harvesters B won Group C with eleven points from five games. The
Saints entered two teams in the Under
12' s Tournament. The A team had three goalless draws against
Wheathamstead, Northwood and Potters Bar in Group B. They then lost
1-0 against Chase Side B and finally lost 2-1 against Wormley Youth who won the
Group unbeaten with thirteen points. The other Saints Team were in Group
D and they drew 0-0 with Cuffley B and then lost
2-1 to London Colney with Ethan Hughes scoring. They then
lost 2-0 to Broxbourne whilst in their final game they beat London
Road, the winners of the group, 2-1 with Andrew Belt netting plus one own goal.
The first Semi Final took place between London Road and
Harvesters B, the match ended goalless after extra time.
London Road won the game 6-5 on penalties. The other Semi
Final between Echoes Youth and Wormley also ended 0-0 after extra time and
once again it was penalty kicks to decide the winner. Echoes came through
the shoot out 3-2 to make it to the final.
The final was also decided on spot kicks after finishing 0-0 after extra
time with Echoes coming through to win 4-2.
