Extra Time Success

ST ALBANS CITY MIDWEEK YOUTH came from a goal behind to send Aylesbury United out of the League Cup with a 2-1 extra-time win on Wednesday evening at Clarence Park. United had taken the lead when Leigh Tomimson lofted the bail over Winston Seidu from just inside the box, and the Saints were unlucky not to equalise when Stuart Aisford headed onto his own bar from a Danny Blyth cross, and Jason Blythe had a header from the resultant corner cleared off the line by Matthew Prince. City hit the leveller in the second phase when David Parkinson squeezed in a header from another Blyth centre. Parkinson was twice thwarted by United’s keeper in extra-time, and Joe Brame also went close, but, with penalties looming, Brame finally notched the winner from an appetising Karl Lucas cross.

19th November 2003

Long road ahead

We may be almost into December but the St Albans City Midweek Youth made their first Allied Counties Premier Division home appearance of the season last Wednesday against Uxbridge, but lost 3-1.

City started brightly with a James Montague effort deflected just wide before an Ollie Lowe header from Jason Blythe’s corner drifted Inches wide of the post. Uxbridge’s Lee Newing had a shot tipped around the post by Winston Seidu and, from the resultant corner, Paul Brame had to clear off the line. David Parkinson raced past three players and set up Blyth, who shot past the post, before  the Saints took the lead when Lowe headed against the bar but forced his own rebound into the net. Eight minutes later though and Uxbridge were level when Josh Holder scored with a free-kick before, two minutes later, a cross-cum-shot from Lee Grant nestled into the back of the net. It got worse on 47 minutes when Seidu tamely clawed away a corner and Lee Newing hammered home the third from the edge of the box. Saints’ chances were finally ended when Parkinson received his marching orders for picking up a second yellow card.

Team: Seidu, Baker, Wilson (Lucas). Brame, Paradise, Pienaar, Lowe (Hanson), D. Blythe (Hawes), Parkinson, J. Blyth, Montague..

FA Youth Cup Second Round heartbreak for the Saints

Bury took a 1-0 lead in the second half from the penalty spot, however with 89 minutes on the clock Matt Hanson found the back of the net for the Saints to take the game into extra time. Four minutes into extra time the saints went ahead with a fine goal from David Parkinson, however five minutes later Bury equalised to take the match to penalties.  The Saints finally lost out 4-3 on spot kicks so Bury now face Blackburn Rovers in the third round.

First league Points

The Saints Midweek team picked up their first league points of the season when they defeated Aylesbury United away by four goals to onel.

The home side had the first chances with Colin Baker and Tony Castielli both going close early on.  The David Parkinson breaks clear for the saints but the Aylesbury keeper Edwards was quick of his line to block the shot.  However the Saints soon when one up when Paul Brame sent over a fine pass to send Parkinson clear, he then took the ball around the advancing keeper to slot the ball home.  Just before half time the Saints made it 2-0 when Parkinson won the ball and then slipped it to Karl lucas for him to cut into the box and drive the ball home past the Aylesbury keeper.

Four minutes into the second half Aylesbury pulled a goal back from the penalty spot after Paradise was adjudged to have handled the ball.  However the Saints came back to make it 3-1 when Jason Blythe played a short free kick to Wilson who found the net from 35 yards.  Just before full time the Saints made it 4-1 when White and Browell combined down the left to send Parkinson racing towards the Aylesbury goal, after passing two defenders he drove the ball home.

1st October 2003

FA Youth Cup - Final Qualifying Round

Chesham 0  v  3  St Albans Midweek Youth

The Young Saints returned to the scene of last weeks league defeat to once again play Chesham, only this time it was not league points at stake but a chance to progress further in the FA Youth Cup.

No team talk was needed as the motivation of the Saints players was clear to all.  With a squad depleted through injuries every single player needed to be on top of his game against a very good Chesham side.  After a goalless first half the Saints came out in the second period and quickly took the advantage to go one up thanks to Ollie Lowe.  Further goals from Troy Peinaar and Colin Wilson (Direct from a corner) gave the saints a three nil victory.  The cup draw gave the winners of this match a bye in the first round proper so the  prize that awaits the Saints is, hopefully, a Nationwide league side in the second round.

Well done to all the players.

Team: Seidu, P. Brame, Wilson, Pienaar, Paradise, Lucas, J. Brame, Lowe, Parkinson, D. Blythe, Montague. Subs : Hawes for D. Blythe, Harvey for J. Brame. Sharpe and McCafferty did not play

Team: Seidu, P. Brame, Pienaar, Wilson, D. Blythe, Paradise, Lowe, J. Blythe, Browell, Parkinson, Harvey. Subs: Hawes for Wilson, Sharpe for Paradise, J.Brame for Harvey. Gray and Lucas did not play.

17th September 2003

FA Youth Cup - Second Qualifying Round

Midweek Youth  3 v  2 Ford United

Playing at Clarence Park on Wednesday 17th September the St Albans City Midweek Youth team entertained Ford United in the Second Qualifying round of the FA Youth Cup. After a nail biting but exciting last five minutes the young saints came out winners by three goals to two.

In the first ten minutes Parkinson fired in a shot from close range that crashed into the side netting while Lucas saw his long rang effort saved.   For Ford United Gustav Teiteh put over a dangerous cross which was headed clear by Lucas off the head of the Ford United number ten Jakobo Ukueku.

After twenty minutes the saints took the lead when David Parkinson played the ball to Craig White who then set up Mark Paradise to score with a terrific drive from twenty yards that flew into the top corner of the net giving the Ford keeper no chance.   Five minutes later Winston Seidu was called into action when he tipped a shot from Gustav Teiteh around the post for a corner kick. With around six minutes to go in the second half the visitors scored an equaliser. The ball was given away in midfield and Daniel Coulson sped away to lob the ball over the advancing Seidu and then tuck the ball into the empty net. Ford United nearly went into the lead but the Saints had to thank Winston Seidu when he firstly pushed a shot from Ukueku at the near post for a corner kick. Then he made a fine save low down from a well struck shot from Coulson.

With only a minute to go in the first half the Saints retook the lead when Karl Lucas played a long ball forward for David "Bullet" Parkinson to run onto and chip the ball over Shalin Crocker, the Ford keeper, as he advanced to the edge of the box.

Early in the second half Jason Blythe saw his 25 yard shot tipped onto the foot of the post whilst Matt Hanson put in a dangerous cross which was caught under the bar by Fords Crocker. Then Parkinson swung over a cross from the left which Crocker let slip through his hands but alas no one was on hand to apply the finishing touch and the ball was cleared to safety. Seidu had to make a number of saves from Coulson, the Ford number Nine while at the other end Jason Blythe saw his low drive saved. Parkinson had a snap shot from the edge of the box deflected at the last moment for a corner. In the last five minutes the game really came to life when the Saints won a penalty after Matt Hanson was fouled in the box following a low cross from James Harvey. David Parkinson took the spot kick and sent the keeper the wrong way to make the score 3-1.

This was when the Saints took their foot of the gas thinking that the match was done and dusted, Ford United struck back with a well taken goal from Ukuekeu to make it 3-2 but the Saints managed to hold on to the final whistle and progress through to the next round.

Team: Seidu, P. Brame, Wilson, Pienaar, Paradise, Lucas, J. Blythe, Lowe, Parkinson, White, Browell. Subs: Hanson for Browell, D. Blythe for Lucas, Harvey for White, Sharpe and Hawes not used.
