The Tournement
St Albans City Youth F.C. sent six teams to Maastricht to compete in the 9th
Geusselt Cup, taking part in four different age groups, Under 12's, 15's, 16's
and 18's. Seventy Five teams from Europe and the USA plus Thirty five teams
from Holland took part in this years event.
The Saints proved too strong for the opposition winning all four of the age
groups entered. When the presentations were made late in the evening the Under
12's Mid Herts found that they had been awarded a Fair Play Award (Howard
Miller made a great job of clearing the pitches of water).
The Winning trophies were presented to James Lawrence (Under 12's North),
Daniel McCafferty (Under 15's), Lawrence Anscomb (Under 16's) and Jamie
Parsons (Under 18's South). Jamie Eames was presented with an award for the
Under 12's Mid Herts winning their final group whilst Tom Fairbairn (Under
17's) picked up the seventh place trophy for the Under 17's.
The club would like to thank the following teams
who hosted the tournament, Sports Club W.V.V. 28, RKSV rapid and Willem I.
Also many thanks to the tournament organisers and the Officials, Players and
Parents of City Youth who made the trip a success.
Under 18's South Back to
Top
On the first day the Under 18's South opened the scoring after just 12
seconds when Adam Wallace swept the ball home from eight yards following a
Kenny Hull cross. Further goals from Ben Graham and Ollie Franks ensured a 3-0
victory over VV. Terneuzen. In their second match they beat F.C. Dahiken 2-0
with goals from Danny Hughes and Craig Mackail-Smith which was a tap in at the
post following a long throw in by Tom Crowne and a nod on by Greg Deacon. The
Under 18's South finally won their group when they defeated VFR Wellensiek 3-1
after coming back from being 1-0 down. Ollie franks, Craig Mackail-Smith and
Ryan Hughes scored the goals for the Saints. Playing Rochester All Stars from
the USA in their first match on the second day the Saints had to settle for a
0-0 draw but they could have snatched the points if an effort from deacon had
not struck the cross bar. They next played US Pianenghese and won 2-0 with
goals from Adam Wallace and Jamie Parsons. In their final game they played VV
Dommelen and what a nerve racking match it was. Craig Mackail-Smith saw his
penalty kick saved just before half time and then VV Dommelen took a 1-0 lead
early in the second half. Greg Deacon quickly equalised with a tremendous
curling free kick from just outside the box that flew into the top left hand
corner of the net. With the Saints pressing forward for that winning goal VV
Dommelen caught them on a break to win the match 2-1. With the Saints players
sitting on the pitch, some of them with their heads in their hands thinking
that they had lost the Cup the news slowly reached them that they had WON the
Cup on goal difference of plus 1. There was certainly plently to celebrate
now. Well done to Ged Deacon and the players.
Under 17's Back to Top
The Under 17's who were playing in an age group of boys who were mostly a
year older than themselves did very well by not losing a match. They also only
conceded one goal in six games, which is a great foundation to build on for
next season. They drew 0-0 against Grasshoppers and IHF Urhus and then
defeated Rochester All Stars from the USA 1-0 with a goal from Jack Bush to
finish their matches on day one. On day two a goal from Alex Free earnt the
Under 17's a 1-1 draw with VV Terneuzen. They next played two goalless draws
against IHF Urhus and VV De Haag to finally finish the tournament in seventh
place. Well done to Peter King and the players.
Under 16's Back to Top
The Under 16's had to play four short matches each day, starting off with a
2-0 victory against F.C. Glattfelden. Chris Seeby went close early in the
second half but his low drive hit the foot of the post, ran a long the goal
line and was cleared. Just before half time the Saints went 1-0 up with a great
curling shot from David Hill from 18 yards after he was setup by Iaian
Turkentine. Collins, Davey, Attwood and Parratt all went close in the second
half before Allister Collins made it 2-0 with a looping header at the far post
over the keeper following a deep cross by Jake Attwood. In their second game
they played Gildersome Spurs and won 1-0 with a superbly taken goal by David
Hill with Turkentine supplying the vital pass. Davey, Collins, Seeby and
Attwood all went close to increasing the lead but that second goal just would
not come. Gildersome nearly scored though it would have been a bizarre own
goal when a backpass hit the post and went out for a corner kick. The Under
16's next played B1 XXXX and won 2-0 with that man David Hill scoring the first
goal, again finishing off a fine passing move between Seeby, Davey and
Turkentine. Hill had an outstanding first day. Iain turkentine went close
twice in the second half before the young saints struck their second goal of
the match. jermaine Davey made a surging run forward to setup Jake Attwood
with a shot at goal, which was saved. The ball then found Davey from the throw
out by the keeper, Davey then found Attwood who made no mistake this time with
a crisp low drive. The young saints in their final match of day one ended in a
0-0 draw against CVV Zwervers after a hard fought game. Ward, Henshallboth
went close whilst Seeby was very unlucky when he saw his header strike the
cross bar after a fine cross from Jake Attwood. The Saints on their second day
played VV Terneuzen first and had to settle for a 1-1 draw. The Under 16's got
off to a fine start when a Chris Seeby drive was tipped over the bar for a
corner kick. Sam parratt took the kick which found Allister Collins at the far
post who quickly laid it back to Nathan Maycock who promtly drove the ball home
from eight yards. VV Terneuzen equalised just before half time when a deep
cross struck the post and was stabbed home from close range for the only goal
the Under 16's conceded in the whole tournament. In their next match they
played CVV Zwervers again and a free kick taken by Attwood was finger tipped
over the bar by the Zwervers keeper to deny the saints the early lead.
Allister Collins scored the only goal of the match when he outpaced the
defence and after going around the keeper calmly slotted the ball into the
empty net. Just before half time the saints hit the woodwork twice within
seconds of one another. Firstly a free kick by Lawrence Anscomb struck the
cross bar and then Iaian Turkentine following up at the far post saw his header
also strike the bar. Anscomb, Seeby and Parratt all went close in the first
half of the Under 16's third game against Rapid RVU (A local side). In the
second half Seeby had a header go close before at last the Saints broke the
deadlock. Jake Attwood made a surging run down the right wing before hitting a
great cross which was headed home by Nathan Maycock from ten yards. A minute
later everyone thought it was 2-0 when Chris Seeby drove the ball home from the
edge of the box after a fine pass by Allister Collins but it was disallowed for
off side. Russell Garland then had to make a rare save at the other end to
ensure the saints held onto the points. In their final match the Saints had so
much of the game against Hirtshals Boldklub but just could not score. Davey
went close twice whilst Attwood had a curling corner kick pushed over the bar
at the last moment. Nathan Maycock hit the cross bar with a header following a
Parratt corner just before half time. In the second half Hill, Davey and
Seeby all went close before, in the last two minutes the saints finally scored,
Sam parratt, the left back, hit a high, hopeful ball into the box and somehow
it found its way into the back of the net with the opposition keeper helping it
on its way as it crossed the line. This goal made sure the Under 16's won
their Tournament. Congratulations to Clive Attwood, Mark Clark and the
players.
Under 15's Back to Top
On their first day in the Geusselt Cup the Under 15's played IF Skjold SBY
and drew 0-0 with neither keeper being really tested. In their next match they
beat RKSV Rapid 2-0 with a fine drive from Kevin Hearne and an own goal,
whilst in their third game another Kevin Hearne strike saw them beat Gel
Lusset BC 1-0. The Under 15's were the third team from the club to go into the
top group for the second day, starting off with a 1-1 draw against Irvine
Meadow BC with the saints scorer being and own goal. A goal from James Harvey
in the next match against St Convais YC saw them win 1-0 whilst goals from
Jason Blyth and James harvey saw them win 2-0 against IF Skjold SBY in their
final match. This meant the Under 15's became the third St Albans City Youth
FC team to win their Tournament. Well done to Alan and the players.
Under 12's North Back to
Top
The fourth team to win their agr group were the Under 12's North and they
got off to a 3-2 victory over local side RKSV Rapid with goals from Chris
Haslam, Ricky Miller and russell Gallagher. They won their next game 2-1
against VV Terneuzen with Ricky Miller and Chris Haslam scoring the goals. In
their final match on the first day they crushed Dalton Dynamoes 6-0 with Ricky
Miller and Chris Haslam both scoring two goals apiece and then singles from
Ross Court and Alex Herbert to roundup the scoreline. Another goal from Ricky
Miller saw the Under 12's North beat SV Belleben 1-0 in their first match on
day two whilst in their second game they beat SPCL Caberg 3-1 with goals from
Alex herbert, Chris Haslam and Ricky Miller. The Under 12's North only had to
draw their final match against Handsworth FC to win their age group. Which
they did 1-1 with a goal from Ricky Miller to bring his final tally to seven on
his first Holland Tour.
Congratulations to Howard Miller, the players and all involved.
Under 12's Mid Herts Back
to Top
The Under 12's Mid Herts saw a team drop out of their group and so they
played the other teams twice. In their first matches against SV Belleben they
drew the first game 0-0 but lost the second 2-0. They then played RKSV Rapid
twice, losing the first match 5-0 but only losing the second match 3-1 with
Jamie Eames scoring the teams first goal of the tour. On the second day the
Under 12's Mid Herts had to play both teams from Dalton Dynamoes twice and out
of the four matches they won three and drew one. They recorded two 3-1
victories over Dalton Dynamoes first team with Jamie Eames scoring 2 goals in
each match. Phil Crump scored the other goal in the first match whilst Adam
Potter scored the third in game two. In their matches against Dalton Dynamoes
Second Squad they recorded a 1-0 victory in the first game with Tony Pitt
scoring and in their second match they drew 0-0 to win their group and
therefore end the final day on a happy note. Well done to Mike, Andy and all
the players.

MATCH REPORTS Back to Top
The Toernooi
This season saw the Saints making their 5th trip to this great tournament,
hosted by Rotterdam club r.s.v HION, played in memory of HION player Tinus
Homburg who passed away whilst playing for the HION Under 15's in the mid 90's.
In previous years the Saints have reached the final three times, runners up
in 1997, winners in 1999 and 2000. As in previous years the hospitaility of
our Dutch friends was fantastic and the club would like to extend a warm
thankyou to all at HION, in particular Jan Giling, Chairman of HION and
Wilfried Veldhuijzen, City Youth Vice President.
Under 18's North Back
to Top
In their first match the Saints played Dutch side RKAVV from Leidschendam.
As in last years tournament the Saints were slow of the mark and went down
2-0. However in the second match playing Slikkerveer the Saints got going with
a fine 4-0 victory with the goals coming from Trevor Smith (Pen), Kevin Coulson
with 2 goals and finally Nick Clark grabbing the fourth, the Saints were back
on track. The next game would be crucial, the Saints needed a draw to reach
the Semi Finals. But who stood in the Saints Way? Feyenoord. In a nail
biting match the Saints having most of the game with shot after shot missing
its target. Then Feyenoord grabbed the lead in a quick break away, before the
Saints could regroup they went a further goal down. then the fightback started
Craig Smith made the score 2-1 with minutes left on the clock. The Saints
thought it was their day when in the last seconds of the match they was awarded
a penalty, what a nervous moment, Trevor Smith runs up and the ball sails
over the bar, Trevor it takes a brave man to step forward, final score 2-1 to
Feyenoord, the Saints would have to settle for a playoff place against KSC
Donk. In the playoff game the Saints returned to form with a fine 3-0 victory
of KSC Donk, the goals coming from Trevor Smith (Well done Trev), Nick Clark
and Craig Smith. Well done to Paul and the boys a credit to the club.
