Under 11's
The Under 11's East collected their West
Herts Youth League Division 2 Under 11's League winners Cup. It is their
first year as a team in the league, so a happy bunch of lads. The
presentations took place on Saturday 20th May at Sun Postal.

First matches for the
Youngest teams
The Under 7's East & West
had their first matches at the recent Cuffley 7 A Side Tournament.
The East team won 2, drew
1 and lost 1 in their group, scoring 3 goals by Billy Rinpoul, Jake
Anthony and the pick of them all from Bryn Williams. Unfortunately this
was not enough to progress to the later stages.
The West team unluckily
lost their semi final after progressing through the group stage with 3
wins and 1 loss, scoring 6 goals along the way by Harry Hawks 2, Jake
Beels, Liam Murphy, Robbie Pennthomas and the pick of them all from
Harry 'Argyle' Lewis. Joe Daymond produced fine performances in goal and
defence.

Under 15's
Fixture backlog, and
injuries, cost West the Title.
After not having a game for 3 to 4 weeks, and with a near complete
squad, West had 3 games in 5 days and suffering with injuries. With
a win necessary to keep City’s dreams of 2nd division football next
season alive, every St Albans player played with their heart on
their sleeve, and did not deserve to lose 3-1 away at Comets in
their last game of the season.
City knew it would be tough from the off, on a hot, draining
afternoon and just 11 players, but every City player went out with
the right attitude and St Albans immediately taking control of the
game, testing the Comets goalkeeper from early on in the game.
But, some lack lustre finishing and some good last ditch tackles
from Comets made sure that City could not break the deadlock. Comets
would have been the happier side to see the half time break arrive
with the teams locked at 0-0.
When City came out for the second half they continued playing with
the confidence they had played with in the first half, which had
perhaps been missing in past weeks. Michael Gamble got the
breakthrough City needed when a Reece May free kick was flicked on
by Nick Glasgow into his path, and he managed to keep a cool head
against an oncoming goalkeeper to slot the ball home.
St Albans continued to press, but Comets got one back on their first
real attack at the St Albans’ goal, when some strong attacking play
saw that City defenders could do nothing but watch a deflected
Comets shot cheaply defeat the City goalkeeper.
Both keepers made saves worth crediting at 1-1. Two Comets goals
then went in following some strange refereeing decisions. The first
was from a freekick which fell over the defence allowing a Comets
striker free through on goal, to finish well into the bottom corner.
Then, a corner was whipped in and an unmarked Comets attacker was
allowed a free header directly in front of goal.
But even then City did not give up and continued to try and get
goals back, but it wasn’t to be, and City lost the game 3-1. But the
boys can be proud of their most successful league campaign to date,
and have been unlucky that the performance has just not been their
in the last few weeks of the season.
Michael Gamble received Man of the Match for a great goal and non
stop running from start to finish.

Under 13's West lift their 1st
silverware!
They had to
wait 4 years but West finally lifted their first trophy at the
St Albans Rangers 11 a side tournament.
An excellent team
performance saw them unbeaten with two draws and two wins to
make the final against Oakhill Tiger Sharks their division
winners this season. West had to get past two St Albans Rangers
teams (runner up in the league) who had drafted in a couple
of red division players to make up their numbers. However the
West defence of Stuart Cole, Elliott Jay, Ryan Maher, Ross
Whinnett and Martin Robinson were more than a match for anything
thrown at them conceding only once in the whole tournament in a
1:1 draw.
The midfield
worked really hard in every game and Greg Springall up front had
an excellent tournament scoring two and making two others. Carl
Biggs also found the back of the net with an important
header from a superb Greg cross and Jamie Heaffey scored an
excellent winner leaving the Oakhill keeper no chance in the 1-0
final win after a great through ball again from Greg. West
proved today what they are capable of and every single player on
the West team contributed to this well deserved first trophy.

U12s East are Premier League
Champions
The U12s East
finished their season on a high by claiming the Red Division Title
in their last league game.
Playing away at
Alexandra Park City calmed their nerves by taking an early lead with
a move of the highest quality involving Sam Rogan, George Wright and
Alex Goldstone which was superbly finished by Fraser Harper. City
then claimed a second at the start of the second half with a precise
finish by top scorer Alex Goldstone.
The final whistle
sparked huge celebrations as boys and parents were soaked with
champagne as the team celebrated in style.
This caps an
excellent season for the boys and gives them their first major
honour as a squad. Only injury and sickness robbed them of further
silverware in a season that also saw them reach the semi final stage
of all 3 major cup competitions.
A fantastic
achievement by all the boys and after 8 months of football and 18
very competitive league games - we are the champions!!
The Championship winning squad:-
Jack Estcourt, George Martin, Sam
Rogan(C), Connor Emerton, Jamie Denyer, Harry Kentish, Niall
McGowan, George Hunter, George Wright, Fraser Harper, Alex English,
Adam Luck, Alex Goldstone, Brandon Hargrave, Howard Smth, Tom
Owens-Nash.

U13 girls County Champions for the second
year
More pictures
>>>>>

The
girls faced Hemel Hempstead Girls in the Herts County Cup, and were
hoping to become county champions for the second year in a row.
Facing opponents in the league below the girls started as
favourites, and a chip from 20 yards onto the bar by Izzy List in
the first couple of minutes seemed to confirm this.
However Hemel were extremely stubborn opposite chasing and harrying
for every ball. Although St Albans had the better of the possession
in the first twenty minutes they only had a couple of half chances
to show for things, with a shot from Alice Warwick being the closest
to breaking the deadlock.
Hemel meanwhile were looking dangerous on the break, although the St
Albans defence were equal to them.
On
twenty two minutes one of the Hemel defenders was badly injured
going in for a tackle and needed lengthy treatment. (thankfully the
girl only has ligament damage rather that a suspected break)
After the prolonged break St Albans started much the stronger and it
wasn’t long before Megan Wynne broke into the box and fired in a
strong shot to make the score 1-0.
Five minutes later she became supplier when an excellent through
ball to Winnie Wallace saw her advance on goal before unleashing an
unstoppable shot, to enable the girls to go in at half time with a
2-0 lead.
The
first few minutes of the second half saw Hemel pressing forwards,
but St Albans soon came back into the game. Hayley Ladd was a
constant source of danger down the right wing as St Albans began to
exert more and more pressure. Mid way through the second half an
excellent through ball from Josie Green set Megan Wynne to score her
second goal to make the score 3 -0. Not long afterward Josie Green
hit the post.
Megan then scored her hat-trick with a powerful run from the right
wing.
There was still time for Izzy List to have a shot headed off the
line, before Grace Lewis scores in the final seconds with a typical
poachers goal at the far post to make the final score 5-0.
The
girls all played excellently, and played some really good football
especially in the second half. All credit to Hemel who continued to
battle away through the game, and never gave us despite losing one
of their best defenders.
The
team was Natalie Hilton, Megan Shaw, Izzy List, Josie Green, Winnie
Wallace, Megan Wynne, Michaells Fleming, Hayley Ladd, Sami May,
Rachel Sherlow, Alice Warwick, Lucy Hancock, Abi Mann, Lucy Mann,
Grace Lewis and Launa Foster

East still need 3 points
The U12s East
entertained Bushey Rangers in their penultimate league fixture of
the season knowing that 3 points would secure the Red Division
Title.
However, Bushey
clearly hadn't read the script and proved what a competitive league
this is as they came away with all 3 points themselves in a 1-0
victory.
In an evenly fought
contest in which Bushey challenged for every ball City enjoyed the
better of the first half with the Bushey stand in keeper leading a
charmed life in his goal. But as much as they pushed City just
couldn't find a breakthrough.
The loss of Frazer
Harper and Sam Rogan through injury early in the second half forced
a re-shuffle in City's ranks but the goal just wouldn't come. To add
insult to injury Bushey took the lead with a breakaway goal midway
through the second half. City then pushed extra players forward in a
bid to at least get something from the game. But it clearly wasn't
City's day as a late penalty was pushed over the bar by the
"charmed" Bushey keeper.
City now have 1 more
league fixture in search of the elusive 3 points!!

CASOTTI SHOOTS NORTH TO VICTORY FOR
ALEX PECK
The Under 10 North’s last mini soccer league game against Finchley Revolution
Red was switched to Highfield Park. The boys move up to 11 a side next season.
Following Alex Peck’s collar bone injury in training on the previous day, The
North boys wanted to win the game for their team mate. Finchley had already
beaten the North 1-0 at the beginning of April & were in the running for the
league title until recently.
Two evenly matched sides found it difficult early on to create clear cut chances
with defences being on top. Eddie Rose was called upon however to make a couple
of saves in the first ten minutes. The North began to get into the game & after
15 minutes Jacob Noonan’s shot forced a save from the Finchley keeper. On the
stroke of half time with all the North players working hard, Jamie Renfrew won a
tackle in defence, broke up the left & played the ball to Daniel Casotti in the
Finchley half. Daniel collected the ball & cut inside past the defender to get
the ball onto his favoured right foot. Daniel struck the ball sweetly to beat
the keeper with pure power & put City 1-0 into the lead. Finchley barely had
time to kick off before the whistle was blown by Seamus Andrew for half time.
In the second half City went on the offensive & won a couple of corners. Jacob
Noonan was foiled with an effort early on in the second half. Eddie Rose was
called into action as Finchley pressed for an equaliser needing attention to his
wrist from the power of the shot. The City defence of William Pellington, Jamie
Renfrew, Josh Smithers & Robert Ward kept the Finchley attack at bay. The
midfield of Max Andrew, Charlie Beedle, Craig McConnell & Jacob Noonan ran their
socks off assisting Daniel Casotti up front one minute, & then the defence next
minute to ensure a victory & clean sheet.
The boys had achieved their victory for Alex. A fantastic effort in their last
mini soccer league game from all the boys to reverse a 0-1 defeat to Finchley in
April. The boys are looking forward to moving up to 11 a side from next season.
Man of the match went to Eddie Rose narrowly piping Max Andrew to the award, for
his saves at key times in the match.
Everyone wishes Alex Peck a speedy recovery from his collar bone injury
VICTORIOUS U10’S EAST (Sun Postal 0 – 1 City)
From
the start of the season, this squad of players, have been a
credit to SACYFC. Our first year in the Watford Friendly League
saw us positioned in the White Division (The only team to win
their League Cup Group not to be put in the Red). The young
Saints entered their final game needing a win away against title
rivals Sun Postal. Prior to the start of the match Coach Mark
Maginnis sensed the boys looked a little nervous, but not in a
scared way, they were nervous in an extra focused way and this
showed in the magnificent performance that followed. From the
very first whistle City took the game to our strong and
committed opponents. Mickey Shuttlewood and Callum Maginnis
bossed our defence to keep the Sun strikers very quiet all
afternoon. Robbie ‘kid on a mission’ Goldstone battled
relentlessly in midfield and linked well with George Hall and
William Harding who basically terrorised our opposition’s
defence. We should have been at least 2 up by half time but
found the Postal keeper in fine form.
We continued
our barrage on the Sun Postal goal and were finally rewarded
with the opener when Josh nipped in to slide the ball home
following some skilful play from Connor McGowan. Sun Postal were
awoken and started to play a lot higher up the pitch searching
for the equaliser, but solid defending from Jedd Dixon kept them
at bay. With Sun Postal really pressing in the dying minutes
they finally got in behind our defence only for our last member
of the squad Samuel Battersby to pull off the save of his season
(their have been quite a few) to deny the luckless Postal player
a sure fire equaliser. City held on to clinch the league and cap
a most enjoyable and entertaining year.
Squad – Samuel Battersby, Mickey Shuttlewood, George Hall,
Callum Maginnis, William Harding, Connor McGowan, Robbie
Goldstone, Jedd Dixon, Josh Farmer and Adam Attewell.

City Scored in last minute to
shock Enfield in 2-1 win
City Girls ended their season on a high after
winning the last home match 2-1 in the final minutes. City went into
the game knowing Enfield could end up in runners up position if won.
It was Enfield who took the brighter start and midway through the
first half took the lead from a corner. An Enfield player came at
back post to volley home. It was only then when city came to life
and in the five minutes before half time City levelled. A mistake
down the right side saw Abigail Cameron nip the ball on and on the
edge of the area got to the ball before the keeper and finished it
in the back on the net. By half time it was time to regroup and now
going down hill look to steal something from this match.
The second half was great to watch but nothing
looked like going City way. As Enfield started to tired City were
pushing front and with just a minute left on the clock City stunned
Enfield. City break down the left was knocked to the right and Chloe
Michael touched the ball and as the defender came across and shot
the ball over the keeper and in the roof of the net to steal the
win. Every player in the squad rushed to celebrate. Enfield like a
lot of team come to City thinking they will have an easy win but
things have now change and Enfield will be one of many to be beaten
in the future. A great way to end the season.

Boys do the Double in County Final
St.Albans City Youth under 14
North met local rivals Nascot Wood Rangers in the final of the Under 14
County Cup.
In the two league games between the sides, City had achieved comfortable
victories against injury-ravaged opposition. This time Nascot managed to
get a full strength side out so a closer game was anticipated.
The game started with St.Albans immediately pushing Nascot on the
defensive, forcing two corners in the first two minutes. St.Albans kept
up the attacks and were rewarded after 6 mins when a shot from Luke
Thatcher was part cleared and fell to Ben Talbot who knocked it back
into the net for 1 - 0. St.Albans continued to apply the pressure but
Nascot's defence held firm with Ashley Fongho Tebiche, in particular,
outstanding. Charles Norman and Jordan Williams worked hard in central
midfield and Talbot and Kieran Ferdinand probed the flanks trying to
create chances for Thatcher and Stefan Williams. St.Albans increased
their lead when another Thatcher shot was not held by the Nascot keeper
,and Talbot following up chipped the ball over the goalie for 2- 0.
St.Albans continued to dominate possession but was unable to add to the
score line for the rest of the half.
The second half got off to an explosive start when a St.Albans defender
was caught in possession, and a quick move saw Nascot's Conor McKie
score a very good goal with a snap shot giving Harry Honeywood no
chance. Nascot tried to push forward and get an equaliser but St.Albans
re-established control of the game and although few chances were
created, the result was never in doubt. Late strikes by Norman, Thatcher
and Ferdinand could have led to further goals but all were just wide of
the target.
City closed out the game and a final score of 2 - 1 was a fair
reflection of a match that didn't quite live up to expectations. Captain
Mark Hiller raised the Trophy to cap a fine season for a revamped team
that also won the Premier League Championship for the first time.
Coach Charlie Sandiford said " The boys deserved the victory for a solid
, hard-working performance from all players "

Double header for 12's West
U12 West played a
double header away against Muswell Hill. The first game was very
close, playing on Muswell Hills very long narrow pitch, the only
option seemed to be a long ball over the top or a pass played
between the defenders. Both teams played the same way and
Muswell Hill got the break when their two strikers were one on one
against Matthew Rodford. A brave save deflected into the path of
the other and the ball was walked over the line. City kept going for
the break away goal with Laurie Blow only narrowly being ruled
offside. The first half finished 1 - 0 to Muswell Hill. Muswell Hill
attacked from the kick off but a great interception by Harvey Scott
lead to Laurie breaking free down the left wing only to be brought
down. The resulting free kick was headed out of the box only as far
as Harvey who smashed in the volley. The defence of Captain Carl
Palin celebrating his 100th appearance, James Pellington, George
Guest and Chris Hudson worked hard to ensure no more break away
goals were conceded. The match finished 1 - 1 with Carl winning man
of the match.
After some
refreshments, very kindly provided by Muswell Hill, the second game
got underway. Tom Pugh arrived for the second game and fresh legs
made an instant difference. Toms powerful running was exactly what
had been missing in the first game and Muswell Hill didn't know what
had hit them. Captain James Pellington celebrating his 100th game
made a long clearance which Tom ran onto and his shot just saved
resulted in an early corner. Harvey Scott delivered a ball into the
box which Toby Sakata fired into the net stunning a flat footed
Muswell Hill defence. This was swiftly followed by a second from
Dominic Oliver who placed his shot into the left hand corner of the
net. The rest of the half was all one way with Jack Evans, Joe
Crawshaw, Joe Madley, Jack Madley and Harvey Scott shutting down
space early in midfield. Just before half time a fine Joe Crawshaw
shot resulted in a corner which Joe Madley floated in for Jack
Madley to make it 3 - 0. Muswell Hill came out more determined in
the second half and slowly edged their way back into the game,
with a little help from some dubious free kicks. A very well struck
free kick hit the underside of the bar going over the line before
bouncing back out. 3 - 1. City then started to play again and the
pressure built. Dominic Oliver's determined run and shot hitting the
post rebounding to David Towndrow who hit home Citys fourth. Dominic
was not going to leave without a second goal and finished off the
game with a superb 5th. 5 - 1. Man of the match went to James
Pellington. Four points from a very long but enjoyable morning.
2nd Double header in 2 days
for the East
The ridiculous end of
season fixture schedule finally took its toll as the U12s East
played their second "double header" in two days in pursuit of the
League Title. City beat Borehamwood Scorpions 2-0 in the first game
only to lose 2-0 in the second game.
City were by far the
better team in the first game and deservedly came out on top after a
superbly struck opener from George Hunter and a well worked second
from Alex Goldstone.
In the second game
Borehamwood were a different team - they dominated the game from
start to finish as City clearly tired and struggled to compete. City
couldn't recover from an early Wood strike and as they pushed
forward in search of an equaliser they fell to the sucker punch of a
Borehamwood second goal. The City legs had gone and there was
nothing left in the tank.
West end Echoes run
City Youth U12 West away
in Hemel ended Echoes unbeaten run 3 - 2. Echoes who have not lost or
drawn a league game this season where beaten in fine style by a strong
team performance. The first half saw City creating all the chances but
as in previous games a goal was proving tricky to find. Dominic Oliver
worked hard as did Jack Madley and David Towndrow. Right on the stroke
of half time Joe Madley ran down the right wing and shot at goal. The
deflect shot was buried by Toby Sakata.
The second half saw
Echoes trying to get back in the game and a mix up at the back allowed
them to equalise. City then raised the tempo pressuring and not allowing
Echoes to settle. A Laurie Blow corner was only cleared as far as Harvey
Scott who restored the lead and celebrated in fine style. More attacking
resulted in another corner which Laurie swung in off an Echoes head. 3 -
1 and five minutes to go. In extra time a very lucky looping shot closed
the gap, but although Echoes had tried hard to get back into the game,
they were not going to keep their record. Carl Palin was outstanding
making sure the Number 5 was kept quite. Chris Hudson, Jake Deacon,
George Guest and Captain James Pellington defended well as a unit and
limited Echoes to only the odd chance. Matthew Rodford made some
confident saves, even when the ball was clearly kicked out of his hands,
he remained calm and fearlessly retrieved the ball. The whole team won
man of the match in a very satisfying victory. Well played
Double header, six points
The U12s East
travelled to North London on Tuesday night and came away with all 6
points from a crucial "double header" against Edmonton Cougars.
The boys held their
nerve and showed great character and spirit at such an important
part of the season.
City won the first
match 1-0 after a beautifully flighted Niall McGowan corner was
volleyed in by Alex English. City then created all the chances but
failed to add to the score.
In a very tense
second game City fell behind to an early Edmonton strike but despite
dominating the first half the Boys remained a goal down at half
time. But the boys held their nerve and at a crucial period within
the second half Alex Goldstone equalised with a typical poachers
goal. Alex then went on to claim the winner with a well taken
second.
A great performance
by the whole squad especially those returning from injury. The
central defensive partnership of Connor Emmerton and Alex English
were superb as was the returning Jamie Denyer who performed
magnificently in the second match.
George Hunter,
Brandon Hargrave, Frazer Harper and Niall McGowan covered every
blade of grass in a superb team performance.

Under 14's
Bad day at the office for
City Boys
The Under 14 North played Borehamwood 2000 in the Challenge Cup Quarter
Final.
City's last game before the County Cup Final saw a depleted team up
against a resurgent Borehamwood side eager to avenge the two league
defeats inflicted by City. Right from the first whistle Borehamwood were
quicker to the ball, turning 50 / 50 balls their way with more
determination and desire. City raised their pace and fought their way
back into the game and after 9 mins a good shot by Thatcher was parried
by the keeper but Thatcher had followed up and headed the ball past the
desperately scrambling goalie. This goal seemed to increase Borehamwoods
determination and they drew level when an innocent looking shot going
straight to Channing took an almighty deflection at the last second
leaving him stranded. The rest of the half was fairly even with few
clear cut chances.
In the second half Honeywood and Wilson replaced Channing and Campion
and slowly but surely Borehamwood began to create chances as their
midfield began to win the battle. City missing the muscular Norman and J
Williams in the engine room were having to rely on the subtler skills of
Ferdinand , Brothwood , Wilson and Killen. This was a day when brute
strength and desire overcame City's abilities and the killer blow came
when a Borehamwood player was allowed to set himself up about 30 yards
out and crash the ball just under Honeywoods crossbar. City tried to get
back in the game but could not find a way through a well marshalled
defence and eventually conceded a late goal when the best move of the
game saw the ball worked down City's right wing and eventually turned in
at the far post. Good luck to Borehamwood in the Semis , they fully
deserved their victory.
City need to produce a much improved performance in next weekend's
County final or the season could end in major disappointment.
Not to be for the 14's Girls
After a slow start
out of the blocks the Under 14's Girls, playing a new 4-4-2
formation, got to grips with the game and began to match the strong
Garston opposition. The girls were playing with confidence and
understanding, organising themselves on the pitch and encouraging
each other. However the Garston forwards were very good and if
given space punished us. This they did for the opening goal. We
then gave them a goal with a wayward attempted clearance and their
third was a deflected shot that wrong footed the goalkeeper who had
it covered.
The girls continued
to play well and the score line did not reflect an evenly balanced
football match. Although we created chances we were not able to get
a goal that we deserved.
To try to rebuild the
loss in confidence that the conceded goals had created the team went
for a more defensive approach. An early goal was conceded after a
slip and a challenge that was not strong enough and then an own
goal put a cap on the day in terms of misfortune. The girls held on
and did not give away any more but were constantly on the defensive
leaving the forwards with little to do. With 10 minutes left the
team reverted to 4-4-2 with nothing to lose and immediately drove
the game into the other half to begin a series of chances that might
have created a consolation goal.
It was not to be.
Under 13's
U13 West Beaten in Cup
A great season for
the U13 West ended on a slightly low note as they were knocked out
of the Spring Plate Cup against Hemel Comets. The game started
fairly evenly though, with a heavy pitch making good passing
difficult for both sides, but opportunities soon arrived at both
ends as Jamie Heaffey ran onto a good though ball but was just
beaten to it by the keeper, while Martin Robinson in goal tipped a
good Comets shot wide. Soon after, Jamie had another great run and
finish, but the goal was ruled out for a handball offence.
The opening goal
however, was scored by Comets from the spot after a dubious penalty
was given with the offending tackle taking place a fraction outside
the area. West didn’t let their heads drop though as firstly a good
move from Matt Peckham to Scott Howlett resulted in a shot from Tom
Weaver that was saved, then from a corner Ross Whinnett’s header
went just over the bar. The first half ended with West the single
goal down, but opportunities had been limited in a pretty scrappy
first period.
Early in the
second half a failure to clear the ball from their area saw West
concede again, which was added to only a minute later to see Comets
leading 3-0, but the boys continued to press forward, and under
pressure from Chris Welch in his own area a Comet player put the
ball in his own net. A further chance to reduce the deficit soon
arrived as a great cross on the right was headed strongly by Ross,
but it went just wide. Comets however, scored again to lead 4-1
before good work between Ross and Jamie again produced a scoring
chance, but the shot went just over the bar.
Soon after Comets
grabbed a fifth from a corner, but West still had one or two
opportunities to score, the best of which would have been as a
result of the Comets keeper rushing out of his area to clear the
ball, however it fell to George Figg who was just inside the Comets
half. With the Comets keeper still outside his area George hit a
beautiful lobbed shot towards the empty goal, but unfortunately it
went just wide.
The match ended
with Comets winning 5-1, and this was probably fair as West had not
passed the ball well throughout the game, while Comets also seemed
to be first to every loose ball, and used their strength more
effectively. In this last match of the season West did create a few
opportunities to make the score line a little closer, but none of
them were really clear cut, however, over the course of the full
season the boys should be very proud of the achievements and
improvements they have made.

East out of
Challenge Cup
The U12s East lost
their third Cup Semi Final of the season going down 2-1 to Omonia in
the Challenge Cup.
City could only
scrape together 10 fit players and with many of the boys playing out
of position failed to impose themselves on a game that will quickly
be forgotten.
The opposition have
the reputation of being the most cynical and unsporting team in the
league - and today was certainly no different. The referee needed
eyes in the back of his head as the opposition elbows and late
tackles flew in together with their constant abusive language.
A goal line scramble
from a corner gave Omonia the lead but City upped their game in the
second half and produced a well worked equaliser with a great finish
from Alex Goldstone. However City couldn't build on this and Omonia
produced a winner late on with yet another scrambled finish from a
corner.
Great credit to all
our boys who yet again kept their composure in the face of extreme
provocation. Especially Connor Emerton who took an elbow in the face
half way through the second half.
It was very
amusing to see Omonia wanting to shake hands with all our boys at
the final whistle - When they loose they refuse to shake hands with
the opposition!! Good teams win and lose with grace!!!
12's East back in League
action
The U12s East
returned to league action for the first time in 5 weeks with a
Saturday visit to high flying Alexandra Park South. And it was City
who took all 3 points with a hard fought 2-1 victory.
City only just
managed to scrape together a side due to illness and injuries but
effort and commitment sealed a very important victory. City started
superbly scoring 2 early goals through Brandon Hargrave and George
Wright but then had to dig in as the home side dominated for the
majority of the game.
On a very hot day and
playing on a rock hard pitch the City boys struggled to match their
opposition but the front 2 of Alex Goldstone & Brandon Hargrave
never stopped running. But as Park mounted wave after wave of attack
they eventually found the net early in the second half with a long
shot. The onslaught continued but strong goalkeeping by stand in
keeper Sam Rogan and last ditch tackles by Harry Kentish & Connor
Emerton kept the opposition at bay.
This was a great
performance by ALL the boys - especially those who dragged
themselves up from their sick beds for the good of the team.

George Martin, George Hunter, Connor Emerton, Harry Kentish, Jamie
Denyer, Niall McGowan, George Wright, Alex English, Adam Luck,

City Boys in Cruise
Control
The Under 14 North played Abbots Youth in the League Cup Group Stage
City, with several first choice players unavailable, employed a
revised formation in a clash that was definitely more of a
motivation for the opposition than it was for City. Abbots started
strongly , winning more of the tackles and looking quicker and more
hungry than the boys who struggled to impose themselves as they were
given no time to get their passing game going. James Killen ,
playing clever little probing balls , began to create chances and
eventually he put in a very good cross which Josh Towle tucked away.
Abbots came back strongly and although they could not penetrate the
City defence, they had to be carefully marked to prevent any
chances. The rest of the half was pretty even until, in the last few
seconds, a teasing cross by Brothwood was eventually forced in at
the far post by Thatcher.
In the second half
City's passing and fitness began to wear Abbots down and gaps
started to appear. Good play and a snap shot by Thatcher saw the
ball run to Brothwood who slotted the ball away. Norman, now running
midfield, was making threatening runs at the Abbots defence, who
were having to concede corners at City applied the pressure. From
one of these corners the ball was cleared to Norman who lashed the
ball into the top corner from outside the area. Abbots still never
gave up , but their resistance was finally broken when Hiller played
a forty yard pass through their defence for Towle to race through
and calmly knock the ball past the keeper. The last goal was perhaps
the best as a passing move saw the ball played across the park for
Norman to unleash another thunderbolt which was past the keeper
before he had chance to react. A 6 - 0 final score sees City on
course to make the Semi-Finals.
St Albans City Youth
1 v 4 Stevenage
Not that the score
suggests but this was a closely fought game between two well matched
teams. The two Stevenage strikers took their chances well and posed
a threat all the game. However they had very few in a game largely
played between the two penalty boxes.
Nothing went right
for the St Albans team. It was one of those days. The ball would
bobble just as the open goal gaped. The great through ball would
clip a heel and drop at the feet of a defender. Your sweeper will
slip on the wet surface after a brief shower. These things happen
in a game but this was a day when everything did not go as it
should.
The home goal could
be seen as fortunate given that it was an own goal but it was the
result of a well taken free kick that put the defender under
pressure.
A number of players
seemed to be below par on the day, perhaps the effect of the holiday
or a long season taking its toll. Christina Berkeley continued her
good spell in central defence with Rebecca Atkins. Claudia Hutton
had another fine game at the front, leading the line. Clarissa
Wright did a fine job in having do deal with a dangerous opponent
and showed progress. However the Player of the Match was Aimee Edel,
another player in good form at the moment who was a rock on the left
in defence and showed great composure that lead to most of the good
football that was produced.

Farewell
Goro
Goro
returns to live in Japan with his family at Easter and during his four
seasons at St Albans City Youth, the 'super samurai' made 133
appearances scoring 142 goals, winning six youth trophies including an
appearance in last season's U12 County Cup final.
Team
Managers Simon Wroe and Michael O'Shea praised Goro saying that
'he set high standards of play and behaviour and is a great example to
all our players. No doubt he will be missed on and off the
field although his absence may well please opposition defences!' The
team are looking to recruit additional players especially strikers for
next season, contact Simon on 01727 872410.
U13 West in Cup Win
West began this Spring Plate Cup game badly, as after only a minute
an Eagles player took advantage of an unlucky deflection off a West
defender from a cross to open the scoring. Although trailing a team
in the division above them, the boys didn’t let the early goal
concern them and they soon got into their stride and forced a number
of chances, the best of which fell to Jamie Heaffey whose shot went
just wide. A greater percentage of possession then saw West force a
succession of corners, and from a rebounded Ryan Rickard strike
Charlie Craigen’s strong shot brought the equalizer. Only a minute
later the boys took the lead as Matt Peckham fed Jamie with a good
ball, and his long run down the wing was finished with a shot under
the keeper to make it 2-1.
West’s growing confidence brought the best out of the midfield, with
Tom Weaver, Chris Welch, Ryan R and Matt dominating, and further
goals arrived from Jamie, who finished well after good work from
Ross Whinnett, who then got on the score sheet himself with Chris
getting the assist. Soon after it was Chris’s turn to score as he
battled well to win the ball in the Eagles area and shoot to make it
5-1.
As
half time approached, and after a few West position changes, the
Eagles team did start to put a bit of pressure on, with one shot
hitting the post, however Ryan Maher, Stuart Cole, Joe Murtagh and
Charlie C were coping well and limiting the Eagles to few scoring
opportunities, and the half ended with the score 5-1.
After the break West took a while to get going, however Eagles
created few clear openings and Martin Robinson in goal hardly
touched the ball despite more of the play being in the West’s half.
Midway through the half following a reshape, West began to raise
their game again and soon added to the score line as a great move on
the right saw Carl Biggs play a good pass to Joe whose excellent
cross was met by Tom who made it 6-1. Soon after, Jamie had a good
run onto goal but knocked the ball a bit to close to the keeper who
managed to parry it away, however Carl got to the loose ball first
and scored comfortably to make the final score 7-1 in West’s favour.
This was a great battling performance against a team in the division
above them. Their passing was good, and the 1-2’s practiced in
training certainly paid off. If anything the score line didn’t tell
the whole truth as they could have got into double figures if they
had received a little bit of luck from the half chances that came
their way as several opportunities went either just over, or wide.
They now need to repeat this against a Comet side, who are also in
the division above, if they are to make the Spring Plate Cup Final.

League Cup Semi Final
Hemel Aces 1 SACY u12s East 0
The U12s East lost
1-0 to Hemel Aces in the semi final of the League Cup.
City once again
struggled to recapture their early season form and hardly carved out
a chance against a strong and well disciplined Hemel defence.
Although Hemel themselves did not threaten on too many occasions
they still controlled the midfield and dictated the game.
The first half
remained deadlocked as both teams cancelled each other out - but it
was Hemel who took the lead early in the second half after a strong
run and finish from their centre forward. City huffed and puffed but
couldn't find a way through and Hemel could even have extended their
lead as City pushed to find an equaliser. But it just wasn't to be
as City lost their second cup semi final of the season.
Hopefully the Easter
tournament in Holland will spark the squad back into life as they
embark on a crazy fixture backlog when they return.

LEAGUE TITLE STALEMATE
Entering the
final lap of the season, the resilient U10’s East played Sun
Postal this week for what was potentially, the first of two
title deciders. Not forgetting Croxley Guild (also still in the
mix for honors), it’s nice for our squad to be involved in a
championship that will undoubtedly go to the wire. Postal
enjoyed some early possession, but City reduced their chances to
pot shots from distance (comfortable for Samuel Battersby) as
strong play from Mickey Shuttlewood, George Hall and Robbie
Goldstone kept things compact. Josh Farmer’s pace and awareness
up front consistently kept Postal on their toes as the first
half drew to a close.
In the second
half a sequence of near misses from both sides (for City, Connor
McGowan & William Harding) defied belief, as the woodwork shaped
like tree trunks. As each minute went by, the Saints grew
stronger and stronger but Sun Postal withstood the late rally
from the persistent Saints as they calved out good late chances.
In reflection the draw was a fair result.
Following this
draw, the U10’s East precariously sit on top of the White
division with two games to go – one each against Sun & Croxley –
should be fun!
Well Done! to
MOM Callum Maginnis who thoroughly deserves this weeks accolades
for his comprehensive display in defence.
NOONAN SHOOTS CITY TO
VICTORY
The Under 10 North travelled to Abbott's Langley to take on
Evergreen Youth in their penultimate league game of the season.
Both teams in the early stages were getting used to the bounce of
the ball. Alex Peck up front put in a lot of effort pressurising the
Evergreen defence. After 12 minutes Jacob Noonan’s effort was saved
by the Evergreen keeper. The City defence of Josh Smithers, William
Pellington & Robert Ward held firm with Evergreen only shooting from
distance. After 15 minutes Alex Peck manoeuvred himself to shoot but
could not get the pace on the shot to beat the keeper. Effortless
running & covering from Charlie Beedle & Craig McConnell in midfield
ensured that City went in 0-0 at half time.
In the second half City Ryan Cobb took the gloves from Eddie Rose,
with Eddie playing in midfield. City took the initiative early on &
started to threaten the Evergreen goal when Josh Smithers header was
well saved by the keeper. After 28 minutes interplay between Josh
Smithers & Jacob Noonan, gave Jacob Noonan a yard of space to
unleash a scorching shot from 20 yards, that went over the keeper &
dipped under the bar to put City into a deserved lead. A goal worthy
of winning any game .City’s defence & tracking from Charlie
(Duracell) Beedle blunted Evergreen’s attacks. In the 32nd minute
Josh Smithers cross from the left found Jacob Noonan in the box, but
his effort was saved by the keeper on this occasion. In the 38th
minute, a melee in the Evergreen box with blocked shots from Alex
Peck & Jacob Noonan, ended up with a left foot shot from Craig
McConnell that went narrowly past the far post. A corner from Jacob
Noonan in the last minute found Josh Smithers at the near post but
his header went narrowly past the post into the side netting.
A fantastic effort from all the boys to reverse a 2-1 defeat to
Evergreen Youth before Xmas at Highfield
Man of the match went to Charlie (Duracell) Beedle for his defensive
heading, tracking in defence & non stop running.

City v Shepway Wanderers
An
inexperienced St Albans City side playing only their second ever game
battled hard in gale like conditions on the
Kent coast against Shepway
Wanderers. Wanderers used their ten years of league experience to full
effect running into a 3 – 0 half time lead. City kept trying to play
football and did not let their heads drop despite Wanderers further
extending their lead in the second half. After a number of close
efforts, City finally scored a late consolation with the best goal of
the game a long range volley from Matt Nash which would have beaten
any goalkeeper. The game ended 7 – 1 in favour of Wanderers, despite
heroic defending from man of the match Ronnell Williams.

Great win for the
West
U12 West beat Enfield
Rangers 2 - 1 at Highfield. The team got of to a slow start and
looked very tired. Enfield took control of the game with their tall
striker making his presence more than felt. A fantastic long range
shot got caught in the wind an went into the net. Unfortunately the
young Saints were one nil down and not looking very bothered. A half
time talk and some new enthusiasm got City back on track and
fantastic through ball from Dominic Oliver (celebrating his 100th
game) put Harvey Scott through to score.
At 1 - 1 Enfield started to get back
into the game and the tall striker could have a few goals had he
shot on target. Laurence Blow then sealed the win with a
fantastic finish into the top left hand corner from outside of the
box. On balance Enfield with only 1 point this season
deserved something more for their determined performance. Man of the
match went to Matthew Rodford who made some brave challenges and
saves from a player nearly twice his size.
Semi Final place for the
East
The U12s East
progressed to the Semi Final of the Challenge cup after defeating
Whetstone 5-1 in the quarter final.
It was the visitors
who started brightly as City took an age to come to life but a
fantastic pass from George Hunter found George Wright who finished
clinically to put City ahead. Stand in keeper Tom Owens-Nash kept
City ahead with some agile goalkeeping and Alex Goldstone made it
2-0 after a strong run by strike partner Brandon Hargrave.
City stepped up a
gear in the second half and began passing the ball quicker and
slicker. George Wright finished well yet again to put City 3-0
up and then completed his hat trick to put City 4-0 ahead. The
visitors got a goal back with a fantastic free kick but City then
launched an immediate attack with George Wright claiming his fourth
and City's fifth.
A fantastic day for
George Wright and a good second half performance by the whole team
which should boost our confidence for the 2 Cup Semi Finals and
crucial League fixtures ahead.

SKIPPER HALL - HEADS THE WAY!
The U10’s East
were made to fight hard for all three points this week in a
pulsating game against a strong Abbots Youth side. Following our
last encounter (a thrilling 3 – 3 draw), this game took off
where our last match with Abbots finished, with both teams
looking lively early on. Against the wind in the first half,
City had to show real determination in defending as a unit and
this challenge was relished by Mickey Shuttlewood, Jedd Dixon
and George Hall with some assured handling from Samuel
Battersby. Even against the element’s City more than held their
own going close on numerous occasions (HT 0 – 0).
Downwind, the
second half was more one sided as the hungry East pushed for the
win. On 30 minutes, William Harding’s volley would have been a
match winner on any other week, but a fabulous save from the
Abbots keeper kept us at bay. As time was running out, four
corners were forced in succession, UP STEP! (skipper) George
Hall – our only out field player not to score all season to
powerfully header home a perfect back post delivery from William
to claim all three points and win the MOM performance, well
done! Captain
COBB IMPRESSES IN GOAL
The Under 10 North entertained Finchley Revolution Red , who are one
of the teams in the hunt for the Blue Division title, at Highfield.
Finchley won the toss & decided to play with the wind behind their
backs in the first half. Finchley went on the offensive & hit the
post in the 2nd minute. Ryan Cobb playing his first game in goal for
City in Eddie Rose’s absence, was called upon to make a number of
saves in the first ten minutes. City were trying to contend with the
wind & the strong Finchley defence. City started to defend in
numbers & kept Finchley to long range shots. Finchley clipped the
bar in the 18th minute but City for all their hard work went in 0-0
at half time.
In the second half both teams were still trying to contend with the
wind. After 5 minutes of the second half the only goal of the game
came when the Finchley forward squeezed the ball in at the near
post. Chances were few & far between for both teams. Robert Ward hit
a sweet volley in the 28th minute that just went over the bar. City
tried to pressure the Finchley defence but they remained resolute.
Ryan Cobb was called upon to tip a shot over the bar just before the
end.
Man of the match went to Ryan Cobb for numerous saves, playing his
first game in goal for City.

City boys show their class
to make County Final
The Under 14 North played Ware Youth in the County Cup Semi Final
This game , played on Ware's ground , against a very good team who were
unbeaten this season would have graced the final.
City, playing against a strong wind in the first half , were initially
pushed back by a Ware team who seemed to be a yard quicker. City got
over their nervous start and as Norman and Jordan Williams began to win
the midfield battle , City gave as good as they got. The defensive unit
, strong in open play , denied Ware any sight of goal and with Ferdinand
and Talbot working hard , probing down the flanks , Ware's defence was
equally rock solid. A first corner to Ware almost led to a goal but a
great downward header bounced over the City goal. A free kick by
Ashcroft was just over the bar and despite a huge effort by both teams,
the half closed 0 - 0 with honours even.
In the second half City
were more dominant but Ware's defensive formation was hard to break down
and chances were few and far between. City threw everything at Ware and
almost scored when a mighty throw-in by Norman was headed backwards by a
Ware defender and only just tipped over the crossbar by the keepers
excellent save. Ware also mounted sporadic attacks but with Ashcroft ,
Harris and Baker strong in every tackle and Hiller calm and controlled
sweeping behind them, Ware were frustrated. In the dying minutes Talbot
had a chance to finish the game but his shot was just over and normal
time finished 0 - 0.
In extra time City
conceded the first goal when a good corner was not completely cleared
and Channing was beaten from close range. City immediately equalised
when a bouncing ball sat up for Talbot to head home. City then took the
lead when Jordan Williams crossed for brother Stefan to poke the ball
past the keeper. City sealed the game when a great strike by Thatcher
was palmed to Campion who crashed the ball back across the keeper.
Thatcher should have scored a minute later , but was hauled down by the
last man who was , perhaps harshly , sent off. Norman capped a good team
performance by gleefully smashing the ball past the keeper for a 4 - 1
final scoreline. A great result by a team that never knows when it's
beaten.
City will play local rivals Nascot Wood Rangers in the County Final at
10.30 a.m. on Sunday 30th April at the County ground at Letchworth.
Solid performance
by 14's Girls
A subdued response to
yet another win for the team. The home team had only 9 girls and a
replacement keeper who injured a leg in the first half. The girls
went through the motions and duly recorded another win. The home
team deserved great credit for a battling performance but they were
out-numbered too many times and put under great pressure.
As usual Jane Jardine
opened the scoring but it was a greater pleasure to see Claudia
Hutton find the net again, the first time since November, to get the
second. Even greater pleasure when Emma Seeby, learning the ropes
in the outfield, scored her first goal for the team.
The second half did
not go well, midfield unable to supply the forwards with any ball.
Eventually the home team shook things up with a breakaway goal only
to concede immediately when Jane Jardine scrambled home whilst lying
on her back with a defender on the goal line. Not one in the text
books.
Claudia Hutton put a
great shot into the roof of the net from outside the area but the
referee had blown too quickly for a handball. Emma Seeby had a good
shot blocked on the line. A solid performance by all the squad
without anyone being spectacular. Claudia Hutton was named Player
of the Match to recognise all the work she does to lead the line up
front, this week and previous weeks, and her goals this week.
Under 13's
West grab the
points
West won their final league match of the season, although they
certainly made hard work of it. As in recent weeks they began slowly
and were struggling to retain possession, and it was Everett who had
the first clear effort which was a great shot heading for the top
right corner of the goal until Martin Robinson made an excellent
save to tip the ball wide of the post. West began to improve though
and soon after a great run and shot from Scott Howlett was unlucky
not to go in as it hit the crossbar but bounced down onto the line
and back into play.
An
opening goal finally came though as Chris Welch fed Jamie Heaffey
who made it 1-0 from close range. Before half time further chances
arrived that could have doubled the lead as Jamie hit a great shot
from the edge of the area but it went just wide, while Matt fed a
good through ball also to Jamie but the Everett keeper made a good
save from the resulting shot. George Figg was also unlucky to hit
the post and see the ball run along the goal line and frustratingly
no one could get a foot on it.
The
second half began much as the first ended as West continued to
create chances that went just wide or the keeper saved, but Everett
didn’t give up and equalized with a powerful shot that gave Martin
no chance. This shocked the West boys into raising their game
further and they soon took the lead again after a loose ball in the
area was met by Chris whose shot hit the bar, but this time it
bounced down and into the goal. Charlie Rainsford’s strong shot
could have added to the lead but the Everett keeper saved well, but
West soon made it 3-1 as Tom Weaver superbly headed in a good cross
from Jamie.
Further chances to increase the lead fell to the boys but their
finishing was not up to their usual standard, and with a minute left
on the clock the West’s defence (who up to then had performed well)
made an error as they waited for an offside decision that didn’t
arrive, and this allowed an Everett player to run free and shoot to
made it 3-2.
Although the score line suggests the game was tight, in terms of
performance the boys played some good football to create plenty of
openings, while some better finishing would have made the winning
margin a lot wider.
The
result means the U13 West team move up to second but will come at
least third in the final league table depending on other results.
Final Score – U13

Herts County Cup SEMI FINAL
Lightning struck
twice as the U12s East crashed out of the County Cup for the second
successive season at the Semi Final stage.
This time it was a
2-0 defeat away to current holders Letchworth.
City started brightly
and could have taken the lead in the first few minutes when George
Wright burst through only to be foiled by a smart save from the
Letchworth keeper. In fact City continued to take the game to
Letchworth but failed to find a way through a well organised home
defence. When a chance did arise their keeper was always equal to
it. Letchworth's route one approach eventually paid dividends after
their giant centre forward ran on to another long ball only to be
taken down on the edge of City's box. The resulting free kick was
perfectly placed in the corner of Jack Estcourt's goal and City were
genuinely unlucky to be a goal down at half time.
Letchworth gradually
imposed themselves more in the second half and City struggled to
carve out any real goal scoring opportunities.
Another long ball
over the top of an advancing City defence gave Letchworth a second
and the game as a contest was as good as over.
The central defensive
partnership of Jamie Denyer and Connor Emerton were immense and the
returning George Hunter produced an excellent display. Alex
Goldstone and George Wright ran their hearts out but Letchworth did
not give an inch throughout the whole game.
In a game of few
chances Letchworth took theirs and City did not.
West play the waiting
game
Under 12s West beat
Harpenden Dynamos 4 - 2 in the Spring Cup. A slow start allowed
Harpenden to take the early lead. A fantastic goal line clearance
from Jake Deacon kept their lead to just one goal. An accurate pass
from Jack Madley put Harvey Scott through and he calmly finished.
Minutes later Jake took a shot which was scrambled and then forced
over the line by Toby Sakata. The lead didn't last long with
Harpenden going round the defence and keeper and tapping home.
Harpenden came out attacking but the defence of James Pellington,
Joe Madley, George Guest and Jake held strong. Matthew Rodford
also worked hard to keep a clean sheet in the second half. George
set up the third, a ball from the half way line bounced over the
keeper with Toby dribbling into the empty net. Tom Pugh's hard work
lead to a corner which Laurence Blow bent into the net. Strong
performances from Chris Hudson, Jack Evans and David Towndrow
wrapped up another good team effort. Toby Sakata claimed two goals
and man of the match.
City now have to wait
until another matches result in April to see if they have done
enough to make it to the final...

VICTORY FAREWELL FOR ADAM
Last week the
U10’s East bid farewell (only on a temporary basis) to Adam Attewell
in fine style with a convincing 3 – 1 League win away to Omonia.
Adam heads for Korea for two and a half years, strictly on a loan
deal, agreed with his parents. Early on, the Saints got a shock when
Omonia took the lead with a well worked goal. This sparked the East
into life as they went close through the lively William Harding and
Connor McGowan. On 10 minutes another through ball found the
clinical Josh ‘catch me if you can’ Farmer, no prizes for where the
ball ended up and his 2nd of the game (20th of
the season) soon followed after a flowing move.
The second half
saw City continually press for more goals and Josh completed his hay
trick – pouncing on a deflection from a Jedd(y) Dixon’s pile driver.
On occasions, Omonia got out of their half but unfortunately for
them ran into the rocks of Mickey Shuttlewood, George Hall and
Samuel Battersby. This week the last words must go to MOM ‘ADAM’ –
in the last minute the ball dropped dangerously in the St.Albans
penalty area and fell to an Omonia striker. All who witnessed the
proceeding block, as Adam flung his body across the area to prevent
the goal bound shot will know what huge gap will be left – Good luck
to Adam and to their supportive family for what has been a fun 3
years with this squad – see you soon, when we are U13’s.
PECK TERRORISES EDSON YOUTH
The Under 10 North travelled to Burnt Oak to take on Edson
Youth who were 3rd in their division with a chance of the
title.
In February, City had lost 2-1 to Edson Youth at Highfield
after squandering numerous chances. City were determined to put in a
performance after their last outing against Evergreen Juniors. After
five minutes Jacob Noonan put Alex Peck through on goal. City kept Edson
to long range shots which Eddie Rose handled with ease. Just before half
time Edson equalised when the forward got round the back & put his shot
across Eddie Rose.
In the second half, City regained the lead. Alex Peck
terrorised the Edson Youth defence with his presence, won the ball &
slipped Max Andrew in behind their defence for Max to fire an
unstoppable shot past the Edson keeper. The lead was kept for 5 minutes
before Edson came back again to equalise. Both sides were looking for
the winner. Late clearances off the line from William Pellington & Jamie
Renfrew ensured City got the draw the team’s efforts deserved. A much
improved all round effort from every member of the team ensured they got
something from the game.
Man of the match went to Alex Peck for his goal, his assist &
overall effort up front terrorising the Edson defence.

The under 15 girls travel to play Cambridge in a match
that would be tight. With 14 players and a strong squad this
game was one they were looking to win. With two new players
added to the squad making their debutantes. The return of
ex-city players Sarah Wiltshire and Chloe Mayirou to add fire
power. City battling the wind and the slope in the first half
took the game to Cambridge. It was an even battle with City
starting to control the game as City pile on the pressure. On
half an hour city stopped playing and Cambridge got on top and a
cross ended with a volley home with Bethany Healy no chance to
get to. A wake up call as City came back and a few minutes
before half time level the match. A long ball up the right wing
ended with Sarah Wiltshire control and beat the defence and shot
over the keeper and into the far corner to score on her debut.
The second half started much the same as City
took control but City wasn't going to have their day. When a
dangerous ball came across the City goal Bethany Healy help it
off for a corner. The resulting corner was cross and a shot well
saved by Bethany first but the rebound finish as City went 2-1
down. After that Cambridge rarely got out of their half as City
camped in their half. Even with 10 minutes left and 3 up front
nothing was going their way and that was included in stopping
time when Sarah Wiltshire hit inches over to seal a 2-1 defeat.
City felt hard done by even with a number of players not playing
to their best.
Defeat in the Spring Cup.
An injury-stricken Under 15's
West side gave their all on Sunday in the Spring Cup against
Omonia from Division 1, eventually losing 3-2.
Omonia started the brighter of
the two teams, applying most of the pressure. But St Albans
held them back with a makeshift defence. St Albans were
first to find the back of the net, when Reece May managed to
latch onto a cross and place the ball in the bottom corner,
giving the Omonia keeper no chance.
Omonia continued to press and
eventually broke through the weakened defence to score from
point blank range. Omonia made it 2-1 when another defensive
error allowed an Omonia striker through to tuck the ball
into the bottom corner. St Albans did break out in patches,
with Daniel Burtt thundering the ball onto the crossbar from
25 yards. But on the whole, St Albans did well to play out
the rest of the half without conceding, and went into the
half time break 2-1 down.
St Albans went out and tried hard
to overturn the 1 goal deficit, but nothing they did got
anywhere, and Omonia took the next goal when some comical
defending gifted a goal to an oncoming Omonia striker, to
smash the ball into the bottom corner.
St Albans scored a late goal,
when Reece May played an excellent diagonal ball over the
defence for Matt Mawhood to volley, which was parried into
the path of Aaron Lumsdon, to tap in from 6 yards.
Final score 3-2 Omonia.
Ben White got Man of the Match
for a great performance out of position at left back,
dominating play and making vital challenges.
Under 14
A game
influenced by wind
The under 14's Girls
played Baldock Girls in a match that was influenced by the strong
wind. With the wind in their favour the home team dominated the
game in the first half despite the slope reducing the opposition to
quick breaks. In truth both teams packed their defences and chances
were few and far between. The St Albans goal was similar to last
week with a long ball from defence up to Claudia Hutton who then
headed the ball on behind the defenders for Jane Jardine to run on
to and volley in from outside the box. The visitors equalised
before half time.
The home team found
themselves having to defend in depth during the second half, perhaps
too deep but with the manager reduced to a hoarse whisper due to a
virus it was not possible to change the game. Baldock scored when a
goal kick was hammered back on the volley over the stranded keepers
head with the help of the wind. A failure to clear a through ball
led to Baldock's third and gave them a cushion for the final 15
minutes.
Rebecca Marsh had a
great game in goal producing one outstanding save that the visitors
coach described as the best he had seen all season. Rebecca Atkins
and Hannah Reardon really drove the game in the first half from
behind the defence. Claudia Hutton and Jane Jardine played very well
up front although without the service they needed in the second
half. Player of the match went to Anna Mason who was a revelation
at right back, providing the attacking drive we have lacked in the
past in that area as well as great defence.
Under 13's
West Push for Promotion
West achieved another good win despite starting slowly, and it was
Tornados who had the first shot at goal, however it hit the side
netting. West gradually came into the game though, and soon
afterwards a ball cleared by the Tornados defence was powerfully
headed back into their penalty area by Chris Welch, but their keeper
got to it first with Scott Howlett and Jamie Heaffey ready to
pounce. The opening goal came after ten minutes as a great drop kick
from Carl Biggs, making a rare appearance in goal, reached Jamie who
lobbed the keeper to open the scoring.
West were now dominating more of the play and could have extended
their lead as Jamie had another shot blocked, while a good shot by
Tom Weaver went just over the crossbar. Helping the team to grab
control of the game was a hard working midfield, with Chris in
particular winning a lot of balls and setting up attacks, and Matt
Peckham and Ryan Rickard supplying the forwards with some good
through balls. Not long after, Jamie ran down the left wing and
crossed into the area where Scott controlled the ball and laid it
back to Chris, however his shot was saved. He soon got onto the
score sheet though as Scott and Jamie combined well to play the ball
to Matt whose superb through ball was met by Chris who ran through a
static defence and struck a great shot to make it 2-0 three minutes
before half time.
West began the second half slowly again, but were still creating
chances to extend their lead as both Scott and Jamie had chances to
add to the score. Tornados were also creating a few chances, but the
defence were limiting their shooting opportunities, while Carl in
goal was positioning himself well, and proved a safe pair of hands
when their strikers did manage a shot.
Fifteen minutes into the second half West scored another as Jamie’s
through ball reached Scott who ran into the penalty area and
finished with a good shot, but Tornados were not giving up and
grabbed what was to be a consolation goal as their striker beat the
West defence for pace and scored. West were not finished though, as
late in the game Ryan Rickard played a through ball into the area
where, under pressure from Jack Sibbery, the Tornados keeper
couldn’t hold onto the ball which allowed Jack to set up Scott who
finished from close range.
The
final 4-1 score line highlighted West’s dominance, and with a bit
more luck they could have scored a few more, however the result
keeps West in with a chance of promotion depending on other results
around them.

Three points for
the West
U12s West beat
Parkfield 1 - 0 in the league. The fastest start of the season saw
City 1 - 0 up in under 30 seconds. A Joe Madley pass to Chris Hudson
who passed to Laurie Blow sprinting down the wing. Laurie then
crossed into the box to a waiting Dominic Oliver showing how simple
football can be. The next 59 minutes were more of a slog. Toby
Sakata, Laurie and Dominic created chances although Parkfield,
fighting to stay out of a relegation place, did not give up. Harvey
Scott stood in well in goal and pulled off the save of the match
keeping the scores level at half time. In almost a complete re run
of the last league encounter with Parkfield the sides remained
deadlocked. Memories of that game and the late equaliser (also last
weeks late goal) meant that City kept on pushing for a second.
Tom Pugh, Jack Evans, Chris Hudson, Jack Madley and David Towndrow
worked hard in midfield taking some of the pressure of the defence.
Carl Palin was once again outstanding using his height, speed and
strength to great effect. James Pellington also made some strong
challenges and the defence deservedly kept a clean sheet. A good
solid team performance and 3 more points. Players of the match James
and Carl.
Semi Final place
for the east but injury list is a concern
With key players out
injured the U12s East stumbled into the semi finals of the League
Cup after defeating Borehamwood Scorpions in a penalty shoot out
after the teams remained deadlocked at 1-1 after extra team.
In a thoroughly
unpleasant match where the opposition supporters and management did
everything they could to confront and intimidate the referee City
had George Wright to thank for an equaliser just minutes from normal
time. The City boys had looked tired and lethargic in a match that
will quickly be forgotten and with players playing out of position
struggled to impose themselves on a game that neither tem deserved
to win.
City were lucky to
survive a second half where Borehamwood missed a penalty
before taking the lead. But credit where credit is due we dug in and
earned the draw. The injury jinx struck yet again with Jamie Denyer
and Tom Owens-Nash limping off leaving City to play out extra time
with only 10 men. But we hung on and went through in penalties with
Brandon Hargrave, Alex Goldstone and George Martin all successful
from the spot and Keeper Jack Estcourt saving two.
At such a key stage
of the season the mounting injury list is now a real concern.

BLOWN AWAY BY EVERGREEN
The Under 10 North travelled to Abbotts Langley to take on
Evergreen Juniors.
City had beaten Evergreen juniors 2-0 earlier in the season
at Highfield but Evergreen had hit form in recent weeks.
The conditions did not suit football with a hard
pitch, bouncing ball & strong winds.Playing against the wind in the
first half both teams had difficulty keeping the ball on the
pitch. The wind & defences were keeping opportunities for either side
a rarity. After 12 minutes Jacob Noonan shot made the Evergreen
keeper work.Five minutes later a high ball into the City box bounced
over the defences heads onto the Evergreen forward who put his wind
assisted shot past Eddie Rose.
In the second half, City had the wind behind their backs but
the ball was beating the forwards.Evergreen had a couple of half
chances running at the City defence but Eddie Rose was equal to
their efforts.Eddie Rose went closest for City when his clearance
bounced just over the Evergreen bar.City just could not get going &
Evergreen had more hunger to win the game.
Man of the match went to Josh Smithers for his effortless
running and tackling

Under 14's
North are Premier League
Champions
The Under 14 North played Nascot
Wood Rangers in the League.

City's final league game of the season saw them needing two points to
secure the League Championship for the first time for this squad. A
slightly nervous start saw City immediately take the game to Nascot but
over anxiousness led to missed passes and off target shots. After five
mins , a good pass from Stefan Williams put Thatcher in and his shot
just missed the post. This settled City down and a few mins later
a cross from Ashcroft was firmly headed past the keeper by Thatcher.
Nascot kept battling but with City's back line of Harris , Hiller,
Ashcroft and Baker in commanding form , they could not get through.
Jordan Williams and Norman were making damaging runs in midfield and
creating chances for the strikers. A nice ball played through to
Stefan Williams saw him graze the post , and another precise pass by
Jordan Williams to brother Stefan saw the ball rifled home for 2 - 0.
The second half saw City more dominant and Ferdinand using his blazing
pace was scaring Nascot's defenders into mistakes. A Thatcher knock
through to Ferdinand was controlled , and then a burst of pace
took him through the defence where he blasted the ball over the
keeper for 3 - 0. City rang the changes to get all the squad on the
pitch but Nascot could not make any impression and the final goal came
when a short corner routine saw Thatcher put in a clever cross which was
partly cleared to Ashcroft who tucked the ball away for 4 - 0. A final
excellent double save by keeper Honeywood who had been a spectator till
that moment capped a good performance by a team that deserved to win the
title after a season of growing confidence and maturity.

14's Girls lose out to
Hoddesdon
Having watched
Carlisle United defeat Northampton 3-0 in a game where they were
hammered for the first half by a team that could not get the ball
into the net, this was more of the same except we were the
frustrated losers.
After an easy win
some weeks ago the Hoddesdon team were surprised by our new approach
and we dominated the first 15 minutes. We did not make use of this
dominance and constantly hit through balls to their keeper, not to
our own forwards.
Our new goalkeeper,
Rebecca Marsh, came on in time for the defence to have a "blonde
moment" failing repeatedly to just get the ball away until the
visitors put it into the net. Just what your new keeper needs!!
She then demonstrated what she could do by blasting a long kick to
the halfway l
