Under 16's
Under 16's Wrap-up the League
Playing Cheshunt Youth in a double header and needing just two points from
the possible six on offer to win the league the Under 16's secured one point
in the first game. The first match was 0-0 at half time but from a poor clearance
early in the second half Cheshunt went in front. The Saints quickly replied
when from a Jack Welsh corner kick, James Harvey headed home for the equalising
goal and the match finished one all.
In the second game the Under 16's won 2-0 and therefore secured the remaining
points needed to finish the season as Mid Herts Rural Minors League Division
One Champions. Both the goals were scored by Matt Hanson, the first was a
left foot volley from 12 yards and the second came about when he charged
down a clearance and struck the ball home from eight yards.
This is the third season on the trot the Under 16's have finished unbeaten
in League matches. Congratulations to all the players and the Under 16's
management team.
Midweek Youth
Midweek Team Secure Second Spot in the
League
The Midweek Youth team were at home to Ruislip Manor in their last home fixture
of the season, and they needed to win by five clear goals to finish runners
up in the East Division of the Allied Counties Midweek Youth League.
The Young Saints got off to a great start when after only two minutes play
they went 1-0 up. Greg Deacon from the left hit over a perfect cross for
Craig Mackail-Smith to head home off the inside of the far post. This goal
set the saints up to look for more and Deacon, Mackail-Smith, Attwood, Seeby
and Lutton all had efforts which went very close or were saved by the Ruislip
keeper Lee Horne, who was kept busy during the whole match.
At last after constant pressure the saints went 2-0 up, Jake Attwood played
a one-two with Chris Seeby and Seeby eventually scored with a low shot inside
the near post from ten yards. Both Deacon and Anscomb went close before
the Midweek team made it 3-0 five minutes before half time. Mackail-Smith
played a ball to Seeby who crossed the ball low into the six yard box for
Greg deacon to score with ease with a simple tap in from three yards. Just
before the break Steven Bayliss hit the post for Ruislip in a very rare attack.
Early in the second half it was 4-0, deacon struck a fine curling shot which
was tipped over the bar for a corner kick. Kenny Hull took the corner
and delivered a perfect ball to the far post for the waiting Ben Graham to
head home and make it 4-0. The scoreline finally reached 5-0 when a
cross by Mackail-Smith was cleared for a corner, kenny Hull again delivered
another perfect ball, again to Graham who headed the ball home from six yards..
it was soon six nil when Attwood and Hull played a one-two for Hull
to deliver a great cross into the box for Mackail-Smith to race in and head
into the back of the net. Goal number seven arrived when Attwood and
Iaian Turkentine combined to set-up Craig Mackail-Smith to complete his hat-trick
with a low drive from ten yards.
Mackail-Smith then set-up Seeby to score but his effort hit the post and
was cleared for a corner kick. Kenny Hull then delivered yet another
perfect corner for Ben Graham to complete his hat-trick, but this time he
side footed the ball home from close range. With only a few minutes
left Craig Mackail-Smith scored his fourth goal of the night and made the
final result 9-0 to the Saints to finish of another great season for the
Midweek Youth team.
Under 11's
Under 11's South match the County
Champions
The Under 11's South played London Colney Amber in the league, Colney,
starting the match by fielding several former City Youth players from last
season needed a win to claim the League Title. However the Young Saints
had other ideas to spoil the London Colney party.
After a hard fought first half the match remained goalless but after five
minutes of the second half London Colney took the lead. however this
was the spur the Young Saints needed and the soon equalised when james Smith
played the ball to James Rosson who scored a fine goal with a delightfull
ball over the keeper. the Under 11's South then went 2-1 up when a
corner kick by James Smith was struck home by George Hackett. With
only a minute to go London Colney scored to make the final score 2-2. This
was a fine performance by the Young Saints with both Kieran Finlay and keeper
Jordan Aimkhlui having oustanding performances for the Under 11's South.
Under 18's
All for Charity
The Under 18's North played Oaklands College at Clarence Park to raise funds
for the Prader Willi Syndrome Association.
This was a highly entertaining match with the Saints earning a 3-3 draw after
being 3-1 down at half time. The match raised over £400 for the
charity.
The goalscorers for the Saints were Lewis Dommett in the first half and Alex
Free and Ollie Clegg in the second.

Under 17's
League and Cup Double for the
17's
The Under 17's rounded off their season in style, already crowned as League
Champions they beat Hertsmere 7-0 at Sun Sports in the West Herts Youth League
Challenge Cup Final.
Chris Seeby had three chances early in the first half, one went wide and
the other two were saved by the Hertsmere keeper Roshan Senanayak. The Young
Saints finally took the lead when a well flighted cross by Jake Attwood went
over the keepers head and then hit the back of the net at the far post. Chris
Bergin and Seeby both went close before the Saints made it 2-0. A well taken
corner by David Hill was headed down by Seeby and Allister Collins was quick
to pounce and stab the ball home from six yards. Bergin and Seeby again had
shots saved by Senanayak, in the Hertsmere goal, although he could do nothing
when a cracking shot by Matt Jones struck the bar.
Allister Collins made it 3-0 with a header at the far post after an Attwood
corner kick. Just before half time David Hill scored the goal of the match.
When after receiving the ball from Chris Seeby he struck a fantastic drive
from twenty yards that flew into the back of the net giving the keeper no
chance.
After only two minutes play in the second half Chris Bergin was very unlucky
when he saw his header hit the foot of the post and rebound back into play.
Ollie Lutton and Iaian Turkentine both had headers go just wide of the woodwork
before the Under 17's hit goal number five. A David Hill corner kick was
powerfully headed home by Chris Seeby and not long afterwards it was six
nil when Chris Ward won the ball for Chris Seeby to fire home with a low
shot from the edge of the box.
Chris Seeby finally scored his hat-trick when a David Hill cross fell to
him after he turned his marker, he then drove the ball home from just inside
the box (Seven Nil). Jake Attwood was unlucky later on when his lob over
the keeper was cleared off the line by a defender. Captain Lawrence Anscomb
collected the trophy for the Under 17's to complete the other Double of the
Season.
Under 11's
Under 11's West Lift the Spring
Cup
To finish off what was a good week for the Youth Teams the Under 11's West
defeated Aldenham Eagles in the final of the Spring Cup, played at Chorleywood,
2-1.
In the first half the Young Saints had most of the game with Daniel Burtt,
Nick Glasgow and Daniel Bissill, all having efforts go very close or saved,
whilst James Watt had a shot cleared of the line. Just before half time Michael
Gamble had two well struck shots saved and then Bissill fired in a free kick
that just cleared the cross bar.
Early in the second half a long range shot from Albie Morris for Aldenham
took one bounce and found the back of the net to give Aldenham the lead.
The Young Saints quickly hit back when they were awarded a free kick on the
edge of the box. Daniel Burtt took the kick and he curled it into the roof
of the net, over the keepers head and three defenders who were on the goalline.
Two minutes later he took another free kick only to see it cleared off the
cross bar. Another effort, this time from Michael Gamble struck the bar,
came back out only to be cleared.
Bissill, Burtt and Leigh all had shots saved whilst at the other end Jamie
Peters was on hand to clear a dangerous attack by Aldenham as full time was
getting ever closer. The Saints struck the winning goal when Lawrence Leigh
took a throw in to pick up Ethan Fogarty who headed on to Michael Gamble
for him to score with a low drive into the bottom left hand corner of the
net from twelve yards.
After the match Captain for the day James Watt went up to collect the trophy.
Well done lads.
George Walker Memorial Trophy
Played at Clarence Park
This trophy, named in memory of Club President George Walker was played at
Clarence Park between St Albans City Youth Under 12's South and Cassiobury
Rangers Under 12's.
Early in the first half Ed Morrison went close and then Rob Phillips saw
his well struck drive just clear the Cassiobury Rangers bar, whilst another
effort from the same player was saved low down by the foot of the far post.
Phillips also had a chip shot caught under the bar by Joe West, the Cassiobury
keeper and then Scott Corley and Scott Pointer-Bull saw their shots saved
as well. Just before half time Ed Morrison fired in a cracking shot that
flew just past the post.
In the second half Morrison headed the ball just over the bar after a fine
corner kick from Scott Corley. Tom Hanson, the Saints keeper then pulled
off a fine save from Ben Adams for Cassiobury.
The Saints finally took the lead when Jack Smith played an inch perfect pass
for Scott Pointer-Bull to run onto and although his first shot was blocked
by West the Cassiobury keeper, Pointer-Bull picked up the loose ball to run
on and slot it home into the empty net from ten yards. Tom Hanson made yet
another fine save to keep the Saints 1-0 up, this time from a well struck
shot from Ranjiv Chadha.
After this little scare the Saints then made it 2-0 when Scott Corley set-up
Ed Morrison to score with a fantastic lob over the keeper from 25 yards.
Cassiobury continued to press and were rewarded when they pulled a goal back
when Ben Adams had his shot pushed out by Hanson only to see Kevin Wong score
with a tap in from close range.
Jack Smith was very unlucky for the Saints when he saw one effort cleared
off the line and another strike the post with the keeper well beaten. Just
before the end of the match Scott Corley made it 3-1 with a fine low shot
from just inside the box that found the far corner of the net.
Stuart Walker presented the trophies, first, Jamie Grierson collected the
Runners-up trophy for Cassiobury, then Scott Corley collected the George
Walker trophy on behalf of the Saints. Ben Adams for Cassiobury won the Man
of the Match award.
Chittenden Trophy
Played at Clarence Park
The Under 15's East played Harvesters at Clarence Park in the Chittenden
Trophy, sponsored by Chittenden Autos. Although the Young Saints had most
of the match they had to settle for a 1-1 draw and a share of the trophy.
Both Mark Savory and Ben Conrad went close early on whilst long throw-ins
by Adam Stanley caused panic in the Harvesters goalmouth. Stephen Pyke, Ian
Smith and Ben Conrad all had shots saved by Chris Beadle, the Harvesters
keeper. Against the run of play Harvesters took the lead when a cross-cum
shot Bobby McBrierty took a deflection and crept in at the near post. Daniel
McCafferty nearly equalised but his twenty yard shot was saved by the keeper,
Conrad also went close shortly after but his effort was also saved. Cameron
Greer cleared a goal bound header by Savory off the line and then a long
throw by Stanley saw the ball bounce across the six yard area with four players
missing an open goal. A long drop kick by Danny Goodchild found Stephen Pyke
clear but his low drive was also well saved.
In the second half the Saints had most of the play, again with loads of chances
going begging, with Smith, Pyke, Savory, Stanley and McCafferty all having
chances. With time running out Mark Savory cut into the box after a fine
surging run but alas his low shot crept just past the far post after he had
slid the ball past the advancing Harvesters keeper.
So after having most of the play and with defeat looking likely the Saints
at last scored a well deserved equaliser. A fine drive from the edge of the
box by Pyke saw Mark Savory quick to pounce on the loose ball after the
Harvesters keeper had blocked the shot, and Savory then tucked the ball away
to make the final score 1-1.
The Young Saints were very unlucky throughout the match and their touch football
deserved more than just a draw.
St Albans City Midweek Youth
win the Allied Counties League
Cup
The Saints Midweek Youth Team, after beating Chesham (North Division Champions)
in the semi final of the League Cup now faced Thatcham (West Division Champions)
in the final being played at Slough Town F.C. Thatcham had only conceded
nine goals during their league campaign this season.
The Young Saints got off to a bright start when firstly Craig Mackail-Smith
saw his snap shot saved and then James Montague saw his effort go just wide
of the post. Then Chris Seeby saw his dangerous cross cut out by Clarke the
Thatcham keeper.
At the other end Ian Davis for Thatcham saw his well struck effort hit the
post and rebound out for the danger to be well cleared. Peter Hanson, in
goal for the Saints, found Mackail-Smith with a long kick and his drive was
saved at the second attempt by Clarke. The Saints finally opened the scoring
when a long ball upfield by Ben Graham was chased by Craig Mackail-Smith
who after beating a defender to the ball then proceeded to lob the ball over
Terry Clarke into the back of the Thatcham net.
Mackail-Smith then had a shot tipped around the post and a header just over
the bar as the Saints looked to increase their lead, both chances were set-up
by Chris Seeby. A Hull free kick saw Graham connect with his head to just
brush the outside of the post. The Saints went 2-0 up and what a goal it
was, Kenny Hull played the ball to Jake Attwood on the edge of the box and
after turning his marker he hit a glorious shot into the top left corner
of the net from sixteen yards giving the Thatcham keeper, Clarke no time
to move.
Chris Seeby should have made it 3-0 when he was found in plenty of space
but his shot lacked power and was easily saved. The Saints then went to sleep
and let Thatcham pull a goal back when Ian Davies shot home after being set-up
by Byron Porter.
The Saints nearly restored their two goal advantage when firstly Deacon saw
his goal bound header cleared off the line by Andy Johnson after a good cross
from Attwood and then Mackail-Smith fired a shot that just brushed the outside
of the post. At the other end Ollie Lutton was on hand to clear a header
by Byron Porter following a corner kick from Andrew Maatinus.
In the second half Attwood went close and then another fine ball by Attwood
was whipped of the toes of Mackail-Smith as he was about to shoot. The Saints
then came under a period of pressure from Thatcham which saw the Saints ride
their luck for a short period. After these scares the Saints finally struck
again to go 3-1 up. Greg Deacon played a one-two with Craig Mackail-Smith
which saw the latter race away and after drawing the Thatcham keeper towards
him Mackail-Smith then squared the ball to Jake Attwood who drove the ball
home from ten yards into an empty net.
So after winning their Division and the Overall Championship last season
the Saints now add the Allied Counties League Cup to their list of Honours,
all three trophies in the first two seasons in this league. Congratulations
to Manager Clive Attwood, Coach Mark Clarke and all the players and supporters
for another great season.

Under 18's South Lift the Herts County
Cup
St Albans City Youth F.C. Under 18's
South
Herts County Cup Champions 2002 |
The Under 18's South were at the County Ground Letchworth on Sunday to play
Cheshunt Sports in the Hertfordshire Under 18's County Cup Final, the
premier Sunday Youth Trophy in Hertfordshire.
Craig Mackail-Smith had two very early chances to put the Saints in front,
the first was a shot from eight yards which saw the Cheshunt keeper
Kevin Hutchinson block, the second effort was a close range header
which somehow the Cheshunt keeper tipped onto the post and behind for a corner.
At the other end the Saints keeper Peter Hanson miskicked a clearance
but lucky for him Adam Mills snap shot went well wide of the goal. Jamie
Parsons had a header well saved with Hull supplying the cross whilst Hanson
had to make a fine save from a Maskell header following a free kick. At
last the Saints went 1-0 up after they had won a free kick on the right wing,
Kenny Hull curled in a beautiful ball into the box where Jamie Parsons
nodded it down for Greg Deacon to drive the ball home from ten yards.
Cheshunt nearly hit back when the Saints defence let Tom O'Neil have a free
header but the ball rebounded off the foot of the post and was eventually
cleared. Kenny Hull then struck the ball just over the bar after a
fine run by Mackail-Smith. Cheshunt then struck home an equaliser when
a well taken free kick by Rob Tungatt was headed home at the far post by
Matt Maskell.
Both Ollie Franks and Deacon went close with efforts but the score remained
1-1 at half time. Early in the second half Cheshunt went close on a
number of occasions with Hanson punching clear a free kick from Tungatt after
a period of Cheshunt pressure. The Saints then broke clear through
Mackail-Smith who was then brought down on the edge of the box. Dan
Hughes took the free kick and it was Ben Graham who headed home to put the
Saints 2-1 in the lead.
This goal sparked the Saints into life with Ollie Franks and then Ben Graham
both having efforts cleared off the line. Dan Hughes went very close
with a cross / shot right across the face of the goal. The Saints nearly
made it 3-2 when Hulls corner was nodded down by Parsons but Mackail-Smiths
shot was blocked by the Cheshunt keeper. With time running out
Cheshunt scored an equalising goal when Peter Hanson was adjudge to
have brought down Chris Ellerbeck inside the box which Ellerbeck then duly
dispatched to make the score 2-2 at the end of 90 minutes.
So to Extra Time, it was Cheshunt who scored again to go 3-2 up when a high
ball into the box by Lee Roberts for Rob Tungatt at the far post to hook
the ball home. The Saints nearly hit back straight away when Kenny
Hull crossed the ball to Mackail-Smith, ten yards out, but his spectacular
overhead kick just cleared the cross bar. Hanson had to make a fine
save from Roberts while at the other end a Hull corner was gathered right
under the bar. Ben Graham won a corner kick on the stroke of the end
of the first period of extra time, which was taken by Kenny Hull whose fine
cross found Greg Deacon whose shot was blocked but the ball broke loose for
Dan Hughes to slide home the equaliser and make the score 3-3. Steve
McGovern and Dan Hughes both went close in the second period but there was
no further score and the match ended 3-3 and needing spot kicks to decide
the winners.
Adam Wallace took the first spot kick but his effort was saved and then Peter
Hanson saved Cheshunts first kick, 0-0.
Craig Mackail-Smith, Greg Deacon and then Jamie Parsons all put their spot
kicks away whilst Peter Hanson turned Hero by making two more saves for the
Under 18's South to lift the trophy by winning 3-0 on penalties.

MIDWEEK YOUTH REACH LEAGUE CUP FINAL
The St Albans City Midweek Youth team playing away to Chesham in the Semi-Final
of the Allied Counties League Cup last tuesday pulled off a resounding 6-2
victory to book their place in the Final against Thatcham Town.
Chesham nearly scored after five minutes when Steve Miles struck the top
of the cross bar with a curling shot from 18 yards. After this early
scare the Saints got going with Collins, Mackail-Smith, Deacon and Turkentine
all having efforts blocked or going close, whilst at the other end Peter
Hanson had to make a vital save from Darren Crane to stop the home side from
opening the scoring.
Ollie Lutton then put in a deep cross from the right but the Chesham defender
Rob Morris headed the ball clear right of the head of Collins as he was waiting
to pounce and head the ball home. Just before half time the Saints
went 1-0 up when James Montague played the ball to Allister Collins who then
hit over a high deep cross to the far post were Craig Mackail-Smith came
racing in to hook the ball home from close range.
Greg Deacon had a shot saved a few minutes into the second half and then
a well struck shot from Darren Crane of Chesham saw Peter Hanson pull off
a great save by tipping the ball around the post. The Young Saints
then scored two goals in four minutes to go 3-0 up. Firstly Ben Graham
hit a long ball forward which Craig Mackail-Smith chased and as he got to
the goal line he pulled the ball back from the edge of the box for
Allister Collins to tap home from six yards. The third goal of the
match was struck home by Kenny Hull with a cracking curling shot from ten
yards into the top corner of the net. Chesham then pulled a goal back
when Ben Graham brought down Steve Miles in the box and Miles himself took
the spot kick to make the score 3-1. The Saints then restored their
three goal lead when a free kick from Kenny Hull was headed home at the far
post by Mackail-Smith. A few minutes later it was 5-1 when the Chesham
keeper miskicked the ball after a poor back pass straight to Mackail-Smith
and although the Chesham keeper Andrew Heard pulled off a fine save he pushed
the ball straight to Allister Collins who was standing unmarked six
yards out who tapped the ball into the empty net.
Chris Seeby struck the top of the cross bar from the edge of the box after
a fine move with Jake Attwood and then in the 88th minute it was 6-1 when
Kenny Hull curled a corner kick over the line, which the Chesham keeper could
not hold.
In the last minute Chesham pulled a goal back when Kevin Mealor curled a
free kick past Peter Hanson to make the final score 6-2 to the battling Young
Saints.

Semi Final Spot for the Saints
The Saints move into the Semi Finals of the Allied Counties League Cup with
a convincing 4-0 victory away at Buckingham Town F.C.
The Young Saints took the lead after two minutes play when Craig Mackail-Smith
made a great run down the right wing and played the ball to Kenny hull who
put an inch perfect cross in for Allister Collins to head home from eight
yards. Mackail-Smith was then unlucky as a long kick by Peter Hanson found
him free, but his effort was blocked and cleared. Iaian Turkentine
then struck the post with a cracking shot from 35 yards. Whilst Greg
Deacon then saw his effort brush the outside of the far post. However shortly
after Mackail-Smith setup Deacon, who should have scored with the goal
at his mercy but his low drive went just past the post. After this
constant pressure Buckingham at last had a chance when Craig Caldwell broke
clear but he was thwarted by Peter hanson racing out to the edge of his area.
At last the Saints finally scored their second goal and what a scorcher it
was. Mackail-Smith played the ball to Deacon who laid it back to Chris
Seeby who after beating a defender then hit a glorious shot into the roof
of the net from eighteen yards.
Hull then swept a low cross right across the face of the goal whereupon both
Mackail-Smith and Collins at the far post failed to connect. Tom Clarke,

Matt Jones all then went close before Collins finally opened the scoring
with a back-post header from Iaian Turkentine's corner. Turkentine himself
might have doubled the lead, before errors at the back saw Uxbridge come
from behind to lead 2-1. The scores were level again at the break, after
Jones fin- ished coolly, and Chris Seeby netted the Saints' third as they
regained the lead. But again Uxbridge were presented with a way back into
the game by lax defending. The home team then went 4-3 up, and it looked
like it would not be the Saints day as Mackail-Smith had an effort disallowed

were not in form this week and went down at home 3-2 to Pinner Utd in the
Quarter Finals of the Challenge Cup. With the score 1-1 at the end
of full time the Saints went 2-1 up early into extra time but they let the
visitors back into the game and Pinner ran out eventual winners by three
goals to two. The goals for the Saints were scored by Jamie Parsons
and Ollie Franks.

FIRST LEAGUE DEFEAT
The Under 17's kicked off the match without their three main defenders due
to injury and so lost their first League match of the season 4-1 away to
Echoes Red. Two defensive errors early on saw them go down 2-0 but
a cracking goal from Chris Seeby pulled it back to 2-1 at half time, Mark
Hook set the goal up. Early in the second half Iaian Turkentine hit
the bar with a header whilst a corner kick by Mark Hook was cleared off the
line as the Saints pressed forward. twice |
