U8s 6-a-side Tournament at Chorleywood
Sunday May 21st 2000
The last fixture of the season saw the motley crew fully reunited for the
U8s tournament at Chorleywood. We took 2 squads along, equally matched though
designated A and B. The games were 5 minutes each way, with wide, low 5-a-side
style goals. We played a straight 6 players in each match without making
any substitutions. Each squad member therefore played 2 full matches. In
all we used 6 goalkeepers - a different one for each game played.
St Albans City Youth A v Chorleywood A
The As played the home team, Chorleywood A, in a tight tense match which
City began to dominate late on in the first half, but when we did find the
target the home goalkeeper was in fine form. Soon after the break, however,
Harry Honeywood managed to squeeze his way down the left before playing in
Jack Ashcroft, who turned inside and hit a low hard drive almost through
the 'keeper. His second was a trademark strike and followed excellent work
by Laurie Coupar and Sam Crowne. City A then dominated the match, keeping
the home team well away from Tommy Hunt in goal. This was very much a team
effort but perhaps Jake Attewell deserves a mention in despatches - the newest
recruit to the fold, played a major part down the right flank. 2 - 0 the
final score.
Meanwhile...
St Albans City Youth B v Strides
The Bs played on the other U8s pitch against green-clad Strides. The game
was dominated by the busy Bs, who took the lead from a Charlie Wyatt strike
(mis-hit, according to the horse's mouth!) following another excellent set-up
by leftie George Gordon. There followed a period of 1-way traffic as City
battled to find the net again and their endeavours were duly rewarded by
a confident strike from battling Ben Riddell a minute from time. 2 - 0 the
final score here, as well.
St Albans City Youth B v Harvesters
The Bs took the field next too, playing local rivals Harvesters in our changed
strip of blue & white stripes. This was hard fought throughout and the
Bs came through with flying colours. Nathan Byrne opened the scoring. He
took the ball off a Harvester deep in his own half on the left flank, following
excellent work by combative Ethan Douglas. Byrne then beat three players
on a run down the line, cut inside and hit an unstoppable low drive across
the 'keeper into the far corner. It reminded me of George Gordon's run and
close miss against SA Rangers, earlier in the season, but Byrne's aim was
true!
In the second half, City pushed forward again, looking to kill the game off.
They came close several times before stringing together more than 6 passes,
taking the ball from right to left across the width of the pitch...Byrne
to Douglas to Hine to Wyatt, to Hine to Byrne to Clarke...whose shot spun
over the keeper and into the goal. 2 - 0 and it looked comfortable, but
Harvesters fought back and came close a couple of times. First, as City sought
a third, Douglas was left stranded up field with a Harvesters player clean
through. Back charged Wyatt with the sort of pace that usually sets up goals.
His tackle was perfectly timed and brought gasps of appreciation from all
around the pitch - a stunning piece of work and worthy of an England call-up.
Later on, Douglas' covering tackle made the points safe and a deserved victory
was duly celebrated: 2 - 0 final score.
St Albans City Youth A v Borehamwood JSC
The As were on next, against our old foes, BHW...this was again hard fought
throughout, but City started strongly forcing the BHW keeper into some
spectacular saves. Nevertheless, the opposition carried plenty of threat
and the 1st half ended goal-less. However, Jack Ashcroft hit the target twice
in two minutes in the second half, identical strikes from the right angle
of the area, to put the game beyond BHW reach. Once again they were trademark
strikes from this classic centre forward ...superb!
However, this was a team effort, where all 6 players made valuable contributions.
Special mention could be made of Laurie Coupar, who set up most of our attacking
play and who was desperately unlucky not to score a hat-trick (but for
goal-keeping heroics). Equally, James Laws battled away all match and was
deeply involved in everything, using the ball intelligently every time. George
Gill did his usual Bobby Moore impression, while Luke Campion was mercurial
- a cross between Ginola and Beckham. A fine 2 - 0 win and not a bad tackle
all match.
St Albans City Youth A v Cassiobury B
Half an hour later, the As were back in action against stylish Cassiobury
B. For once the game did not go to the City script although we were unlucky
to find ourselves 1-0 down at half time. A strong run from the Cass left
half took him past Jake Attewell's good challenge. The ball broke well for
him and he buried his shot "a la Byrne" into the far corner of the City net.
They say you find out more about yourselves as a team when you go behind...and
City A did not disappoint. Half way through the 2nd half, City gained a corner
on the left, after sustained pressure. The ball was driven across by Campion
and only half cleared to Sam Crowne on the edge of the box. His whipped volley,
low and hard, was not for getting in the way of! 1- 1 and then it was all
1-way. Sadly, we never quite made the breakthrough our play deserved and
this was possibly due to everyone trying too hard!! Tommy Hunt was tireless
up front and took a painful smack in the face with the ball for his troubles.
Jake Attewell again worked hard on the right against a troublesome - and
very effective - left half, while Luke Campion tried every avenue, all without
that touch of lady luck to finish the move...How many tournaments will he
finish without scoring? Not many I think, but this was just one of those
days! 1-1 the final score and honours even in the group.
St Albans City Youth B v Cassiobury A
The Bs took on the Cassiobury As straight after the As drew 1-1 with the
Bs....we all half expected the toughest of games, and it was...for poor
Cassiobury! This was as near a rout as one can get. Gareth Smith was on fire,
netting twice in the first period and repeating the dose in the second, before
Ben Riddell lashed in a fifth. Excellent work from George Hine set up four
of the five, while Riddell had a hand in Smith's second. This was a romp
and Lazarus was desperately unlucky not to score...a superb run through the
middle and shot millimetres wide. 5 - 0 and it could have been more.
To cap the day, Nathan Byrne was voted Most Valuable Player by the referees
in charge of all four Pools (16 teams in all). Well done to him and to all
the players for a superb tournament. Special mention (again) for Ethan Douglas
and Jake Attewell who came down to play knowing that they were the 9th men
of 8 man squads, and would therefore not be eligible for a medal...selfless
team spirit.

St Albans Rangers 0 v 2 St Albans City Youth
F.C.
This was an excellent game to watch, with fine play by both sides in an excellent
spirit competitive and pacy but clean and friendly throughout. We
knew, despite having beaten Rangers 6 1 earlier in the season, that
they were a force to be reckoned with, having both good individual talent,
sound teamwork and a good team spirit. So it proved.
In a goal-less first half, we had by far the better of the game, but
couldn¹t find that final touch. Luke Campion had several good efforts,
the best set up for him by excellent work by George Hine. Jack Ashcroft was
also unlucky more than once, while George Gill, playing as a man-marker in
midfield, came desperately close with a swerving shot from the edge of the
box. However, Rangers also threatened and came very close to taking the lead
when a whipped cross from the left flicked off debut boy Jake Plastow-Chason.
The deflection brought an outstanding point blank reaction save from keeper
George Gordon.
The second half started in the same pattern, but crucially, James Laws took
over from Gordon in goal and he came outfield on the left of midfield. His
industry and skill proved decisive as he made several outstanding runs off
and on the ball up the left touchline. The first goal, however, came from
a corner from the left which would have gone in but for a handball on the
line. Luke Campion duly despatched the spot kick in emphatic style.
Shortly after this George Gordon forced his way into a shooting position.
His shot was blocked on the line by the Rangers keeper but Nathan Byrne
tireless and alert as ever followed up to knock the rebound
in for our second.
Rangers responded positively and James Laws made several important saves,
while Tom Clarke and Jake Plastow-Chason took it in turns to keep the Rangers
attack at bay. The last ten minutes saw us under severe pressure, but the
real highlight of the game came from man-of-the-match Gordon. He broke up
a Rangers attack, powered up the left leaving all but two defenders in his
wake. Skipping neatly between the two on the edge of the Rangers box he
manouevred the ball on to his left foot and struck the sweetest of shots
which whipped across the face of the goal inches wide. It deserved a goal
but it was a privilege to see such superb play from one so young.

The Under 16's South made it three County Cup Finals in three years when
they defeated Kingsbury S>C> at home 2-1 in the Semi-Final. Stephen
Cox gave the Saints the lead from the penalty spot after Craig Mackail-Smith
had been pushed in the back following a corner kick. Kingsbury equalised
with a stunning volley just before half time but with the second half only
a minute old Adam Wallace beat four players in the box with some beautiful
ball control and drove the ball home from close range to send the young Saints
through to the final. Greg Deacon at the heart of the young Saints
defence had an outstanding game.
The top scorers of the day were the Under 18's West who defeated Hemel Celtic
away in the league cup 14-0. Leading the goalscorers was Andrew Findlay

The Under 13's West lost 2-0 away to St Albans Rangers while the Under 12's
East went down 4-1 at home to Harpenden Colts Bulletts with Chris McElligott

The Under 11's North were at home to Northwood in the League and just after

Borehamwood 0 v 5 St Albans City Youth F.C.
This was a surprisingly easy game especially after our home debacle
against Hemel Hornets. We had trained hard, expecting a tough return against
Borehamwood, who we beat 4-1 at home after a rocky start. However, two first
half goals from Jack (move over Shearer) Ashcroft, the first a screamer from
the edge of the box, and a second half hat-trick from Laurie Coupar (the
third quite rightly knocked in from 6 inches after Ashcroft¹s excellent
work), put paid to any hopes of revenge. This was a much better team performance
all round, but, despite superb efforts by Sam Crowne and debut-proper boys
James Laws and Jake Attewell, the day really belonged to Luke Campion. His
overall display was breathtaking and he was desperately unlucky not to score
at least two hat-tricks. One thunderous long-ranger against the strong wind
crashed back off an upright almost clear of the area! He still had time between
defending, attacking and running at the opposition (with and without the
ball) to make at least three of the goals, with the best being a memorable
1-2 with Coupar inside the box. It was nice to win, better still to win against
quality opposition having played so well, but it was heaven to see such a
Campion performance. On a sour note, it was depressing and disturbing to
see at least two Borehamwood players indulging in miles-off-the ball sly
ankle-kicking, punching and shoving at our players. They brought deep discredit
to their team mates who mainly played well, competitively and fairly. It
was heartening that all our players simply ignored the aggravation and walked
away, but such behaviour from 8 year-olds made me both angry and sad. It
is clear that Messrs Beckham, Keane and Wise, to name but 3 regular contributors,
should start to realise the damage that their infantile antics are doing
to the game¹s future.

A Christmas Turkey as far as the match was concerned. It was clear from the
start that we had forgotten what the small round thing was for, while Hornets
buzzed around passing the ball and worked hard for each other. Even so, they
only scored one goal in each half and we had the chances to score six or
seven times.
Despite that, Hornets played better football and worked well as a team, where
City players tried to do it alone. The only player to perform to their true
potential was George Gordon who, despite playing at left midfield, managed
to cover the entire pitch and score a classic right-winger¹s goal.
Definitely one to forget but a salutary lesson for us that nothing comes
easy.

The Under 18's East turned in a great team performance to beat Baldock away
7 - 0 in the Quarter Final of the County Cup. The Saints led 3 - 0 at half
time and all three goals came from crosses supplied by Tom Crowne. The first
was scored by Jason Coughlan from close range after the ball had dropped
loose in the six yard box. The second was touched home by Nick Perchard also
from close range while the third came 30 seconds later with a cracking header
by Jack Davis at the far post from the third of Crowne's crosses. Goal number
four was scored by Tom Crowne with a powerful shot after being set up by
Davis and Perchard while Jason Coughlan struck number five with Crowne yet
again being the supplier. Goals number six and seven were both scored by
Jonathan Jenkins. The first was a tap in after a tremendous shot by Ricky
Perks had been parried by the keeper whilst the second was a beautiful lob
over the advancing keeper from 20 yards with the chance being set up by Alvin
Nascimento. Arthur Hook and Tom Whitlock both played well in defence while
yet again Ellis Arnett in goal had another superb game.
Playing away to Histon in the Quarter Final of the East Anglian Cup the Under
18's West lost their first match of the season when they went down 2 - 1
to a last minute goal. The Saints went 1 - 0 down after 15 minutes and after
being in their opponents half for the rest of the match they were finally
rewarded with an equaliser with eight minutes to go after a fine strike by
Mitchell Parratt. With five minutes to go Parratt hit the crossbar and the
Histon keeper pulled off three good saves to keep the Saints out and then
with a minute left Histon broke away and scored the winner which looked
suspiciously offside. So although the Under 18's West played well they went
out of the cup.
The Under 16's South did not play altogether very well they still did enough
though to beat London Colney at home 5 - 2. The goal scorers were Stephen
Cox, Dean Parsons, Jamie Parsons, Matthew Hills and Craig MacKail-Smith.

but they went down 1 - 0.

Common 1 - 0 at home with Allister Collins scoring the only goal of the match
and he also nearly had another but this time his effort struck the bar.

14's East as they came back from being 1 - 0 down to beat Nascotwood away
5 - 1 in the Challenge Cup. Ryan Nicholas scored the other goal.
Raonull McKinnon struck four times for the Under 14's West in their 5 - 0
victory at home to Northwood in the Challenge Cup with Adam Jennings scoring
their fifth goal of the game.
The Under 13's East were at home to Borehamwood Blue in the Challenge Cup
and with goals from Andy Fassnidge, James Brophy and Joe Brame saw the young
Saints win 3 - 0.

at home to Chipperfield Corinthians in the League, the goals were scored
by James Hearn 2, Robert Battersby, Tom Barnard and Ian Smith.
The Under 12's South turned in an outstanding team performance to defeat
Garston Boys away 3 - 2 in the League with goals from Max Gray, Sam Lyon
and Josh Godden.
The Under 12's East were losing 2 - 0 at home to Everett Rovers and they
pulled a goal back through Chris McElliott but while they were pressing forward
for an equaliser they got caught on the break and finally lost 3 - 1.
Losing 1 - 0 at half time at home to St Albans Rangers but within 30 seconds
of the second half Lawrence Gatier from 18 yards had struck home the equaliser.
With the wind at their backs the young Saints roared on to win the match
4 - 1 with Andy Guard scoring twice and Craig Morrow once to secure the Under
12's West a victory. The Under 11's South lost 2 - 0 at home to Berkhamsted
Raiders while once again for the second week running the Under 10's North
came back from being 2 - 0 down to win 4 - 2. This time they defeated Riverside
AFC Aces away in the League with Tom Collin scoring a hat trick and Carl
Costain one.
The Under 10's South were losing 1 - 0 at home to Riverside AFC Posh when
up popped Scott Corley to make the final score 1- 1.
Two goals from James Smith with his second coming a minute from time saw
the Under 9'sA beat Radlett and Aldenham Warriors 2 - 1 while a single goal
from Reece May saw the Under 9'sB beat Radlett & Aldenham Redsox 1 -
0.
Goals from Alex Ford 2, Michael Gamble, Daniel Bissill plus two own goals
saw the Under 9'sC record a 6 - 2 home victory over Evergreen.
A Hat trick from Laurie Coupar and two goals from Jack Ashcroft saw the Under
8's defeat Borehamwood 5 - 0 with Luke Campion being Man of the Match and
Sam Crowne also having an outstanding match.

7 - a - side: 20 minutes each way
As we had hoped, Riverside provided us with a much sterner test than our
previous opponents. Even so, after a shaky start and despite a poor first
half performance, we still managed to notch up seven and, yet again, could
have doubled that number. Playing on a very muddy and dangerously tyre-scarred
pitch, Riverside started the brighter, putting our midfield under pressure
and generally playing the better football. Despite their early dominance,
they didn¹t really threaten at all until after we had scored twice.
Luke Campion opened our account after 10 minutes and this was closely followed
by one from Laurie Coupar. City went close several times after that, but
Riverside also had a couple of chances, the best of which was when their
nippy winger turned our defence and got in a good cross. This was met by
their forward whose scrambled shot was well saved by Ben Lazarus. The first
half ended 2-0 and it looked like being tight.
However, after the break City started to play to their full capabilities
and it wasn¹t long before Laurie Coupar and Jack Ashcroft doubled our
advantage. Some of our passing at this stage, especially when under pressure
in defence, was first class. Riverside still managed to get forward but most
of their efforts were calmly snuffed out by George Gill, whose use of the
ball once he had won it was generally exemplary. However, while he was off
(as sub), the visitors did break through one-on-one with Ben Lazarus, who
made a great stop. He then came out of goal, to be replaced by Tommy Hunt
who had played very well up front. After Ashcroft scored his second and
City¹s fifth, Lazarus hooked in a fine goal of his own, to put the match
out of the range of the visitors, even before Laurie Coupar wrapped up his
hat-trick with City¹s last goal. Wyatt, Crowne and Smith were all unlucky
not to score and provided most of the ammunition for the scorers, while Tom
Clarke¹s trusty left boot helped anchor our left flank. However, this
was a good team performance, without any individual particularly catching
the eye in very difficult conditions.

The Under 18's East continue to win despite plenty of injuries to the squad
when they defeated Northwood away 2-1 in the league. Chris Fairbairn gave

Beswick free kick. Northwood equalised in the second half but that man Fairbairn
popped up again with a right foot volley from 18 yards to snatch the points.
The Under 17's at home to Garston Boys led 2-0 at half time with two goals
from Kevin Coulson. In the second half further goals from Trevor Smith and
Steven Craddock saw the saints finally win 4-0. Just one goal from David
Hill was enough for the Under 15's to defeat Nascot Wood at home 1-0. The
Under 13's West were no match for Wormley after losing 8-0 away in the East
Anglian Cup. Adam Hull scored the equaliser for the Under 12's East after
a brilliant six man move but they finally lost 2-1 to a goal five minutes
from time away to Bushey Rangers in the Challenge Cup. At home in a tough
league match the Under 12's West went in at half time leading 3-2. The young
saints scored another 3 goals to take a 6-2 lead, but with five minutes to

a fine equaliser for the saints they still went down 4-1. In the East Anglian

minute before half time and a second within a minute of the second half saw

the last seconds as the saints pressed forward looking for the equaliser.
The saints scorers were Max Wolke and Carl Vidgen.
The Under 10's North defeated Whetstone Wanderers away 2-1 with Carl Costain
scoring the first and the other from an own goal after Tom Collin saw his
shot deflected in. Two goals from James Rossen plus one own goal saw the
Under 9's A defeat Chipperfield Corinthians away 3-0. The Under 9's B lost
9-0 away to Enfield Warriors while the Under 9's C lost 5-1 away to Berkhamsted
with Michael Gamble scoring the saints only goal.
St. Albans City Youth F.C. Under 8s League 1999/2000 Season
10.30 SATURDAY NOVEMBER 13th at Abbots Langley
Match report by David Gill
Abbots Youth 0 v 9 St Albans City Youth F.C.
The Squad:
1 Ben Lazarus (gk) 10 Tommy Hunt (gk2)
2 Tom Clarke 11 Gareth Smith
5 Harry Honeywood (c) 12 Charlie Wyatt
7 Luke Campion 14 Ben Riddell
8 Nathan Byrne 15 George Gordon
9 Jack Ashcroft 17 Ethan Douglas
7 - a - side: 20 minutes each way
A flattering scoreline for Abbots Youth! Some incredibly unlucky finishing
and some good goalkeeping kept the score in single figures, but City could
have had three times as many, while, at the other end, the nearest Abbots
came to a goal was a sweetly struck backpass by George Gordon their
only effort on target. Everyone could have had a hat-trick, but in
the end this honour fell only to Ben Riddell. Harry Honeywood, leading by
example, and Ethan Douglas both chipped in with two apiece - Douglas¹s
first a beautifully measured curler from the left edge of the box
with Charlie Wyatt and Luke Campion adding the others.
How Gareth Smith and Nathan Byrne failed to score is a mystery. Byrne¹s
Man of the Match performance set up many of the goals while the tireless
Smith troubled everything but the back of the net all morning. Wyatt, too,
could have scored more but for the brave keeper and the woodwork but he again
showed outstanding pace and awareness down the right flank and he also set
up others¹ goals.
This was the weakest team that we have played to date but, to their credit,
Abbots never gave up. Their most dangerous attack, late in the second half,
was thwarted by Ben Riddell¹s gallop back from the other end, with everyone
else from City trying to match his goalscoring feat! Up to that point, Tom
Clarke and George Gordon had snuffed out every hint of menace with ease,
leaving Ben Lazarus as a cold spectator.
The next game will be at home to Riverside on November 27th.

Findlay*2 and Neil Doctor.

Gary Cattling. Then Harpenden went 2-0 up after a Robert Barker corner kick
was headed on by Stuart Brown for Daniel James to strike home from close
range. Josh Godden for the Saints saw his efforts either saved or just go
wide of the post. William Oxley made it 3-0 with a brilliant left footed
shot into the bottom corner of the net, John Leyland supplied the pass. Harpenden

It took just 25 seconds for the Under 18 east to open the scoring in their
home match against Evergreen when Chris (Skip) Fairbairn beat the keeper
in the box and promptly drove the ball into the empty net, after the first
goal for City it was Evergreen who had the better of the chances but the
ball would not run for them. In the second half Jonathan (Sniffer) Jenkins
living up to his nickname pounced on a half chance in the six yard box and
struck the ball home to make it 2-0. After this goal the Saints the Saints
started to play and they scored a third when Alvin (Pele) Nasimento cut into
the box and smashed the ball into the back of the net to make the final score
3-0. The Saints keeper Ellis Arnett had another outstanding game.
One cracking left foot shot and another well taken effort by Michael Rowe
saw the Under 18 West go in at half time with a 2-0 lead at home to Garston
Boys. The visitors pulled one back but Andrew Findlay quickly struck at the
other end to make the final score 3-1 to the Saints.
The Under 17's were at home to Herons Red in a league match. Despite plenty
of chances at either end the score remained 0-0 till the last 5 minutes.
Herons went 1-0 up with the minutes ticking away but with only seconds to
go the Saints were awarded a free kick just outside of the box and Trevor
Smith drove the ball home much to the delight of the fans to make the final
score 1-1. Both the Under 16 sides lost, firstly with the North losing 3-1
at Ongar in the East Anglian Cup despite Adam Wallace scoring an equalizer
just before half time. The south lost 1-0 at Walthan Abbey in a match were
they did not create many chances.
Playing at home to Harvesters saw the Under 15's loss of form continue as
they went down 2-0 to two second half goals. Two well struck efforts by Nick
Malham were blocked by the Harvesters keeper, just to prove that it was not
going to be the Saints day. The Under 13's east got back to winning form
when they defeated Garston Boys away 4-0. Adam Stanley scored the first goal
in the first half but it was not until the last 15 minutes that they rattled
in three more goals (Alan Glynn, James Brophey, Harry (Boy) Hunt).
Away to Harvesters in the second leg of the League Cup the Under 13's Went
in at half time 3-1 up with goals from Robert Battersby, James Cook and Bobby
McBrierty. In the second half though the young saints fell away and finally
lost the game 4-3 but not the match as they had won the first leg 6-0 and
therefore go through 9-4 on aggregate.
In a real end to ender the Under 12's East lost 5-4 away to Suffolk Youth
in a league game. The Saints goals came from Sam Hatton*2, and the man of
the match Josh Godden also netted two.. Ashley Funnell was the hero in the
Under 12's East away league match at Hemel Celtic as he saved a penalty for
the Saints with the score line at 2-1 for St Albans. Chris McElligott quickly
went down the other end to make the final score 3-1 to the Saints while Adam
Hull and Stefan Day scored the other goals for the East.
Losing 2-1 at half time then 3-2 in the second half the Under 12's West struck
back against Evergreen to win the match 6-3. Andy Guard scored five goals
bringing his tally so far to 20 this season. While Craig Morrow scored the
other goal.
Alex Fraser scored the only goal for the Under 11 North as they defeated
Evergreen at home 1-0 while Jack Stevens for the Saints nearly made it 2-0
but his 35 yard effort struck the crossbar. Away to Garston Boys the Under
11 South went down 3-2 with Max Wolke and Carl Vidgen scoring for the Saints.
The Under 10 North also went down by the same score line away to Suffolk
Youth with goals from Alex Potter and Tom Collin, they could have earned
a point but for a missed penalty in the second half. The Under 10 South had
an off day and went down 2-0 away to Riverside AFC.
A hat trick from Sam Youngs plus one from Jack Cowham saw the Under 9's A
beat Radlett-Aldenham Warriors away 4-0. The Under 9's B did not take all
their chances as the A team did but they still won 2-0 over Radlett-Aldenham
Redsox with goals from Toby Irish and Daniel Burtt.

a fine solo goal from John Patton, after he beat two players in the
box before calmly slotting the ball past the advancing keeper earned the

not enough for the Under 11's South as they went down 5-2 to Moor Park Rangers.
Playing at home to Oxhey Jets in the Challenge Cup the Under 10's North just
could not score and although the scoreline remained 0-0 after extra time

St Albans City Youth 6 St Albans Rangers 1
The Squad:
2 Jack Ashcroft 7 George Gill (c)
3 Nathan Byrne 8 George Hine
4 Luke Campion 9 Harry Honeywood
5 Laurie Coupar 10 Tommy Hunt
6 Sam Crowne 11 Ben Lazarus (gk)
7 - a - side: 20 minutes each way
This local derby provided City with their strongest test so far this season.
Despite the handsome final scoreline, it was Rangers who started the
brighter, outpassing, outrunning and generally outplaying City for a good
ten minutes. They only failed to make their dominance pay thanks to three
good saves from Ben Lazarus and the post.
The introduction of Luke Campion and debut-boy Laurie Coupar swung things
City¹s way, however. The team started to get their passing game going
and this created space for Jack Ashcroft to exploit on the right hand side.
His strong run and shot were too much for the Rangers keeper and the ball
bobbled off the post and over the line, with Sam Crowne in close attendance
just in case.
If that goal had been against the run of play, it was all City for the next
half-hour. Coupar and Ashcroft both added fine individual goals before half
time, while Tommy Hunt, re-entering the fray for the second half, scored
a superb second half hat-trick his third an unstoppable drive from
the right side of the area. Despite City¹s dominance, Rangers never
gave up and there were some memorable duels all over the field. George Hine
and Nathan Byrne battled skillfully against the visitors¹ midfield,
while George Gill, Sam Crowne and Harry Honeywood all performed excellent
last-ditch defensive work as Rangers kept pushing forward. Eventually, Rangers
pressure told and they scored a late consolation after a tired-looking clearance.
All in all, a satisfying victory for teamwork, against strong opposition,
with the scoreline paying tribute to crisp finishing, rather than total
dominance.

St Albans City Youth 4 Borehamwood JSC 1
The Squad:
2 Jack Ashcroft 14 George Gill
3 Luke Campion 9 George Gordon
4 Tom Clarke 1 Tommy Hunt
5 Sam Crowne 10 Ben Riddell
12 Ethan Douglas 11 Charlie Wyatt
7 - a - side: 20 minutes each way
A superb performance by the U8s against a very useful Borehamwood side. City
dominated from the start and should have had four or five goals by half-time.
Instead, the visitor¹s goalkeeper played magnificently and several players
were unlucky not to score. In particular, Charlie Wyatt hit the post with
a fine far post header and, minutes later, put the ball over from 6 yards
with a difficult half-volley. It was left to Man-of-the-Match Jack Ashcroft
to give City a 1-0 half-time lead, taking the ball off a defender before
slotting it home confidently. Goalkeeper Tommy Hunt hardly saw the ball due
to fine midfield work and Tom Clarke¹s fine defending. Fortunately for
City, they managed to hit the target early in the second half, Charlie Wyatt
just scrambling the ball home after good work by Ashcroft. George Gordon
hit a spectacular left foot drive which was unstoppable, before Ben Riddell
deservedly hit a fourth to confirm City¹s superiority.
This was another all-round team performance and the whole squad played their
part in full. The passing and movement would have put some senior sides to
shame, and the willingness of every player to work hard for each other was
exemplified when Ashcroft relieved Hunt in goal and promptly pulled off a
splendid save, low down to his left from the visitors¹ first real shot.
Borehamwood claimed a fortunate consolation with a deflected free kick (own
goal) while City were reorganising after central defender George Gill had
gone off following a blow to the head. Nonetheless, they deserved it for
their perseverance alone and it is likely that they will give City a sterner
test in the return fixture later in the season.

Match reports from David Gill
A flying start for the U8s against a very recently re-formed Hornets side
(this was their first game together). City dominated from the word go and
allowed the Hornets just 1 shot on goal in the whole game, dealt with
comfortably by Ben Lazarus at the start of the second half. Tommy Hunt, whose
first-half passing was a delight to watch, then took over between the sticks
and became another spectator! However, this was an all-round team performance,
with every member playing their part in full. Luke Campion took the scoring
honours with a hat-trick but no less than 6 of the squad got onto the score
sheet with a seventh forcing an own-goal. Despite the relatively weak opposition
it was very heartening to see the passing and movement coming together, while
every player worked hard for the team, making the victory seem easier than
it really was. All the players were used, with frequent substitutions, ensuring
that everyone had a taste of the action for as long as possible. Naturally
everyone is eager for the next game.
