City Youth Pledges its Support

Following the news that Mr John Gibson has taken control of St Albans City Football Club and they can now resume its League fixtures, St Albans City Youth Football Club have issued the following statement:

The news that the Senior Club has been saved is excellent for everyone involved with the club and the City as a whole. The uncertainty regarding the future of the Senior Club during the past season can now, hopefully, be consigned to the history books and the business of running a successful football team with strong links to the community can now resume.

The link and association between City Youth and the Senior Club has been, in recent seasons, limited to our management of the successful Midweek Youth Set-up. However the main aim must now be to strengthen the link for both the good of the Senior Club and City Youth. The Management Committee of St Albans City Youth Football Club wishes the new owners every success and looks forward to working with them in the future.

Good Luck

Mervyn Morgan Chairman

St Albans City Youth Football Club

7th January 2002

The Objective of St Albans City Youth F.C.

Following the January Management meeting the issue of the seeding of players and teams was discussed at great length.  The club has held a policy that teams, as the years progress, tend to reduce in number at the mid range age groups (14's/15's) and form into stronger units.  This policy will remain.  The overall objective is that the younger players should enjoy their football without being subjected to the excessive pressure of the win at all cost attitude. As we have shown over the past 30 years this policy works.

The objective of St. Albans City Youth Football Club is to provide, were resources allow,  organised football for the Youth of St Albans and the surrounding area, regardless of individual players abilities.

11th December 2001

Mr George Walker - A TRIBUTE

George Walker, one of the most influential and charismatic figures of Hertfordshire Football sadly passed away on Thursday 6th December 2001 in Hemel Hemstead Hospital.

Born in St. Albans, George was himself a very good footballer playing for local teams within the area.  During the Second World War George's first job was at  de Havillands Aerodrome in Hatfield. Towards the end of the War he was then called up for his National Service, firstly in the Royal Airforce before being transferred to the Army and ended up serving in India.

On his return to Civvy Street love soon blossomed and he married Joyce, a union that was to last over 50 years. George and Joyce both shared a number of interests, none more so than football, George playing and Joyce watching. George was heavily involved in the very successful Marconi side of the Sixties's, from managing the team to organising the social side of the club.

As the years progressed George then became involved with what turned out to be his second great love, St Albans City Youth Football Club. This involvement stemmed from his Son Stuart playing for one of the Youth teams of the club, which quickly drew George into the organisation side and eventually Chairman. George's tenure as Chairman of City Youth spanned over Eighteen years, during which the Club grew from a handful of teams to, at his retirement as Chairman in 1997, 16 teams. George then became President of City Youth, a position he was extremely proud to hold. George's involvement in football was recognised by the Football Association in the Nineties when they made him an Honouree Life Member, further recognition also came from his beloved St. Albans City Football Club when they awarded him their highest honour by making him a Life Member.

Tributes have been received from all quarters of the footballing world, all of which highlight the legacy of lifelong achievement George has left behind. The Current Chairman of St Albans City Youth F.C. Mervyn Morgan, who succeeded George in 1997 said we have not only lost a great man but also friend and mentor.

George leaves a widow, Joyce, Son Stuart and Daughter Lynette.

The funeral will take place at 11.00am Friday 21st December 2001, Service at St. Peters Church St. Albans followed by a Burial Service at Hatfield Road Cemetery, St. Albans. Arrangements being handled by Phillips Funeral Directors, Floral Tributes welcome.

Mervyn Morgan Chairman St Albans City Youth F.C.

LETTER TO EDITOR - ST ALBANS OBSERVER

Dear Editor,

Re: letter from Peter Smith Published in last weeks St Albans Observer.

Yes, I would agree that with all of the off the field problems currently besetting St Albans City F.C. the success of the Mid Week Youth side has been encouraging. However I must point out that the Midweek Youth Team setup has been run in its entirety by St Albans City Youth Football Club with the senior club providing the match day facilities at Clarence Park. All of the administration, coaching and day to day financing of the team has been carried out by City Youth. In order to cover the expenses we held a joint Senior Club / City Youth Christmas raffle which helped to cover the costs of the floodlights, etc. at the Park. In addition through the support of David Bedford we obtained two places in the recent London Marathon which again helped to raise funds for the Midweek youth setup. John Kendall, manager of the senior club should also be praised for not only the support and encouragement he has given to City Youth but also by way of his dignified professionalism during the recent off the field problems at the senior club, well done John.

The aim of setting up the Midweek Youth Team was to provide the younger players of City Youth with a target to aim at in the last 2/3 years of their Youth Football careers. The success of this years Midweek Youth squad has exceeded all of our expectations, this is down to the leadership and coaching of the Midweek Youth Management Team and of course the boys who have taken up the challenge so successfully.

Getting to the main point of my letter, Peter Smith mentioned having the right leadership, everyone involved with St Albans City Youth Football Club, as with other local youth football teams, i.e. Harvesters, Rangers, etc., gives their time free. However this is done on a backdrop of little support or encouragement from the local council which is extremely disappointing to all concerned. St Albans City Youth F.C. as a club are now entering there 30th Year and one man has been involved with the club for all of that time, Ian Woods. if it were not for people like Ian, St Albans City Youth would not be the club it is today. If the people of St Albans want successful well run youth football teams then we need the Support, Backing and Encouragement of the local Council in helping us in providing the facilities to do the job.

Mervyn Morgan
Chairman
St Albans City Youth Football Club

HERTS UNDER 15's COUNTY CUP FINAL
HARVEY HAT-TRICK WINS IT FOR THE YOUNG SAINTS

The most important match of the day was the Under 15's Herts County Cup Final which was played at Leverstock Green FC against Knebworth Youth.
The Young Saints started brightly with first Matt Hanson going close and then Kevin Hearne having a couple of shots, one of which brought out a fine save by Ross Armstrong the Knebworth keeper.  The Young Saints finally took the lead when Kevin Hearne was sent racing clear by a great pass from Paul Brame and then after going around the keeper Hearne calmly struck the ball into the empty net.
